Solenis Inspires the Next Generation of Scientists

Bradford College Science students had the opportunity to explore the world of science beyond the classroom as industry professionals from Solenis delivered an engaging science masterclass.

The session gave students the chance to learn more about the work at Solenis, a global company specialising in solutions for water-intensive industries, while gaining an insight into the opportunities available to those pursuing a career in science.

Holly McLeod, who works in business support and communications at Solenis, and Jackie Casagranda, Laboratory Manager, joined Bradford College’s Chemistry Teacher Simon Marshall to deliver the session.

Students took part in a practical experiment, applying their learning in a hands-on environment while developing their understanding of scientific processes. The activity encouraged students to work independently, follow instructions and record their observations.

Reflecting on the session, Holly said: “I think it went really well. I think they were really engaged, especially in the experiment.”

Jackie agreed, highlighting how active the students participated throughout the activity, setting up the experiment themselves and recording their findings.

For Foundation T Level in Science students Shayan and Issa, the masterclass offered an interesting insight into the wider world of science.

Issa summarised the session: “The masterclass was very nice and offered us information with everything to do with Science industry, about our world and what’s going on, and how science can do their part to help”.

Building strong industry partnerships

The masterclass formed part of the ongoing relationship between Bradford College and Solenis, which has previously included T Level placements, work experience, site visits and careers fairs.

Holly described the relationship as particularly positive over the past year, highlighting the strong links developed between Solenis and the College’s Science and Engineering provision.

She also explained how important it is for employers to give young people opportunities to gain experience in the workplace and learn from established professionals.

Solenis has welcomed Bradford College students into its workforce, with Holly highlighting how students and apprentices make up much of the company’s production department. This demonstrates how industry placements can provide a valuable route into employment and support long-term career development.

Laboratory Manager, Jackie highlighted the value of industry placements, explaining how they allow young people to gain practical experience, build their knowledge, and develop their skills in a professional science-related enviorment.

Jackie also encouraged other employers to consider offering similar opportunities, saying: “Give it a go! We’ve had a load of students progress onto an apprenticeship and most of them are still here.”

Holly added: “It makes a huge difference and there’s so much knowledge you can pass on. So, it is worth doing.”

Through experiences like this masterclass, Bradford College continues to connect students with employers, helping them develop their understanding of industry and explore the many pathways available to them.

By bringing education and industry together, students can see how their learning applies in the workplace and begin to consider how their interests and skills could shape their future careers.
