Go Higher West Yorkshire and Uni Connect

We are proud to be founding members of Go Higher West Yorkshire (GHWY), a formal consortium set up and funded by us alongside 12 other Higher Education (HE) providers to support collaborative working between member institutions to reduce long-standing inequalities in access to and success in higher education. The member institutions are:

The University of Huddersfield
Kirklees College
Leeds Conservatoire
The University of Leeds
Leeds Arts University
Leeds Beckett University
Leeds College of Building
University Centre Leeds
Leeds Trinity University
Heart of Yorkshire – Wakefield College

The core function of GHWY is to help us with collaborative Access and Participation Plan/Statement activity in our local area:

GHWY directly delivers some work on our behalf where this cannot be done by a single HE provider alone, for example the Care to Go Higher CPD programme aimed at those who support care-experienced young people.
It also convenes networks of staff to work on collaborative outputs, as well as share and transfer sector knowledge, learning and good practice. Examples of outputs include:
- The Disabled Learners Transition Pack
- Free e-learning modules for student-facing staff to better understand and support care-experienced students, and disabled students
- An annual collaborative Teachers’ and Advisers’ Higher Education Conference

The team at GHWY can also support with bids for externally-funded projects which are relevant to our mission, for example the Uni Connect programme, which is funded by the Office for Students.

Uni Connect works with young people, as well as teachers, advisers, carers and employers, to offer targeted activities, advice and information on the benefits and realities of going to university or college. It was set up in 2017 to meet one of the strategic goals of the Office for Students, which is to help ensure that access to higher education is not limited by someone’s background, location or characteristics.
