Ophthalmics

We’ve been teaching Ophthalmic Dispensing at Bradford College for over 70 years. Our tutors are qualified dispensing opticians and Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) external examiners, meaning your training is delivered by experts in the field.

Whether you’re new to the field of Ophthalmic Dispensing, or are already working at an optical practice, our undergraduate degree and Level 6 blended diploma will qualify you as a dispensing optician with plenty of room to progress in your career.

Learning will take place in our industry standard laboratories and clinical suites at our brand-new Garden Mills campus. With new equipment such as the Intuitive Colorimeter Wave machines, this new optical diagnosis technology allows learners to practice clinical diagnosis decision making.

Once qualified you can apply to for a Fellowship of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians and become a General Optical Council Registered Dispensing Optician.

A number of past students have gone on to score the highest national results in their ABDO final qualifying exams. You can also gain additional certifications from us by taking our Low Vision Honours or Contact Lens Certificate.

Our Facilities

Our extensive Garden Mills refurbishment was the result of £5.8m funding receied from The Office for Students (OfS) Higher Education Capital Fund with a £1.1m College contribution. We were one of only five institutions nationally to receive the maximum allocation.

Contractor Tilbury Douglas completed the incredible transformation of the derelict 1900s five storey building ready for use from Autumn 2024. Garden Mills now enhances our substantial health science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) facilities, incorporating:

  • a prep room
  • six digital IT labs
  • an ophthalmic dispensing suite
  • a clinical suite
  • a real-life work environment with consulting and testing booths
  • a collaboration area
  • academic teaching spaces

I think the people that run the course are really good. There are not many places in the UK that do [the course], and especially if you get backing from your employer, it makes it a really good opportunity. Aimee Crabtree FdSc Ophthalmic Dispensing Alumnus
Clare Broughton
My experience at Bradford College was exceptional. I genuinely think that the teaching staff at Bradford College are excellent; the level of knowledge that I've managed to get in three years is genuinely the highest standard of education. Clare Broughton FdSc Ophthalmic Dispensing

It’s challenging, but as long as it’s what you want to do, it’s worth it and it’s beneficial. This is my second degree. Just go for it! Jeanna Hilton FdSc Ophthalmic Dispensing Alumnus
