Final Year HE Computing Students Showcase Innovation at 2026 Open Day

On 13 May 2026, Bradford College proudly hosted its annual HE Computing Final Year Project Open Day, celebrating the achievements of students from the BSc (Hons) Software Engineering and BSc (Hons) Network Infrastructure and Security programmes.

The event brought together FE students, academic staff, external examiners, university partners and industry professionals, creating a vibrant space for collaboration, feedback and inspiration.

Throughout the day, students presented the outcomes of their independent, year-long projects, demonstrating not only technical expertise but also research, problem-solving and professional skills applied to real-world challenges.

Projects spanned a wide range of areas, including:

  • AI-powered learning platforms
  • Mobile applications focused on mental health, AI chatbots and flood detection
  • Social media analysis and fake news detection tools
  • IoT-based home automation systems
  • Cloud computing and real-time monitoring solutions
  • Advanced system design, including a NixOS Graphical User Interface

Many of the projects showed strong potential for real-world deployment – including solutions that could be implemented within the College itself.

A Platform Designed for Bradford College Students

One of the standout projects came from Software Engineering student Danial Hussain, who is planning to do a masters at Bradford University. Danial developed an AI-powered learning system designed specifically for Further Education students.

His platform transforms traditional teaching materials into interactive learning tools:

“It’s a hub for FE learning… students can break down complex topics. The AI can take PowerPoints and turn them into games, quizzes or flashcards.”

The system is designed to improve accessibility and engagement, helping students learn in a way that best suits them. It can summarise content, generate revision tools and offer multiple ways to interact with course material.

Danial is already looking ahead to refining the platform:

“There’s some improvements I need to make… increasing the speed and improving the layout. For now it’s an idea piece, but I will develop it further.”

With clear potential for implementation at Bradford College, this project highlights how student innovation can directly benefit future learners.

Building Confidence Through Software Engineering

For many students, the journey has been about more than technical skills. Craig Walding, a final-year Software Engineering student, reflected on the personal growth he experienced:

“I’ve gained more confidence… I used to be the shy guy, but I’ve learned to work with people, talk with them and come out of my comfort zone.”

Craig is now looking to apply his skills in the workplace, exploring roles in software testing:

“I want to use my skills to find faults and improve systems… just make products more efficient overall.”

Similarly, Nojus Toleikis demonstrated advanced technical thinking with his project developing a graphical user interface for NixOS, a complex Linux-based system:

“I’m trying to abstract the complexity… so users can configure the system without dealing with all the difficult parts.”

Preparing for Careers in Cyber Security and Networks

Students from the Network Infrastructure and Security programme showcased their readiness for industry through technically focused, career-driven projects.

Azaan Akram, who has studied at the College for four years, reflected on how far he has come:

“The course has been stupendous… we’ve grown so much from when we first started.”

He now plans to deepen his expertise through professional certifications:

“I feel certification is the perfect route for me.”

Mohammad Talha Saeed shared a clear progression plan combining work and study:

“I plan to start with an entry-level job… alongside completing certifications like CompTIA and cloud security, and then move on to a Master’s.”

Mohammad Ismail is aiming to specialise in cyber security while also building a professional presence:

“I’m looking at entry-level roles in cyber security… and maybe going into content creation in my field as well.”

Meanwhile, Rehan Asif, whose project focused on disaster recovery systems, emphasised the practical value of the course:

“It helped me understand not just the fundamentals, but how to implement them in a business context.”

He plans to pursue a career as a cyber security analyst, supported by further certifications and industry experience.

Industry Engagement and Real-World Feedback

The Open Day also welcomed a range of industry professionals, including representatives from FAS Solutions, Nettrades.AI, Purple Sq, Ministry of Justice, Synox, and SEP2. Their presence gave students the opportunity to present their work to experts, receive valuable feedback and gain insight into industry expectations.

A Key Milestone for Future Careers

The Final Year Project Open Day represents an important milestone in each student’s academic journey. Beyond technical achievement, the event helps students develop essential employability skills such as communication, presentation and professional confidence.

As one student reflected on their experience at Bradford College:

“The tutors are very supportive… they always try to help you and push you to succeed.”

With innovative ideas, practical experience and clear career ambitions, the Class of 2026 leaves well prepared to step into the technology industry.

Speaking after the event Science & Digital Lecturer Sangeeta Bhattacharya said,

“I am very happy and proud of the students for what they have produced as part of their Final Year Projects. It reflects a great deal of independent learning and, in many ways, makes us feel successful in achieving what we aimed for as tutors — helping students develop the confidence to present themselves strongly in interviews and future careers. This batch of students has truly been one of our best, and I wish them all the very best for the future.”
