In October 2025, the Landmark Trust invited Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media students to visit Calverley Old Hall. As part of their radio and podcasting module, the Landmark Trust offered them the experience of working on a live professional brief. The students were given a guided tour of the building and introduced to the history of the site, the Calverley family, and the Landmark Trust’s project to restore it.
As part of the project, students worked collaboratively to research, script writing, record and edit a series of podcasts designed to share the building’s stories with new audiences.
While the students were assess on their media production skills rather than historical accuracy, Landmark Trust credited them on what a fantastic job they did bringing the stories to life. The outcome of the project is a four-part podcast series exploring different aspects of Calverley Old Hall’s history and restoration.
The episodes cover:
Episode 1: The Calverley Family before 1550
Episode 2: The Calverley Family after 1550
Episode 3: The Development of the Building Through the Ages
Episode 4: Community Engagement on the Landmark Trust Project
The project enabled the students to apply classroom learning into a professional setting, honing their skills in research, storytelling, audio production, interviewing and communication.
Creative Media Tutor, commended the students:
“This project has been an insightful opportunity for our students, who were asked to create historical podcasts inspired by a visit to the Calverley Old Hall. I’ve been genuinely proud and impressed by the quality of the work they produced and the extensive skills they developed throughout the process, from research and scriptwriting to audio production and storytelling.
Working with the Landmark Trust offered them a valuable real‑life experience of planning for an external brief and engaging in authentic client interaction, which added depth, relevance, and motivation to their learning.”
This collaboration highlights the college’s commitment to providing students with meaningful employer-led experiences that prepare them for careers in the creative industries.
Through the project, students not only developed technical media skills but also gained valuable experience working to a professional brief, meeting client expectations and creating content for a public audience.
The Landmark Trust has now published the completed podcasts on its website (click here to listen), giving students the opportunity to see their work shared as part of nationally recognised heritage project.
The Calverley Old Hall restoration project and accompanying podcasts were made possible thanks to funding from National Lottery players.
