Bradford College Ophthalmic Dispensing Students Celebrate National Success at ABDO Graduation
Students from Bradford College celebrated their outstanding success at the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) graduation ceremony, held at Canterbury Cathedral on 12 May 2026.
The prestigious event marked a significant milestone for learners completing their qualifications in Ophthalmic Dispensing and Contact Lenses, with several Bradford College students not only graduating but also achieving top national awards.
Among the award winners were:
Gemma Sumpton – Rodenstock Prize for the highest mark in section D of the Level 6 Ophthalmic Dispensing Diploma Final Qualifying Examination.
Rebecca McEwan – The BCLA prize for the highest aggregate mark in the Contact Lens theory examinations
Alisha Wharton – The Johnson & Johnson prize for the best candidate in the Contact Lens practical examinations.
These achievements highlight the exceptional talent and dedication of Bradford College students and the high standard of teaching across its Ophthalmic Dispensing and Contact Lens programmes.
Bradford College’s Ophthalmic Dispensing Head of School Nick Walker attended the ceremony to celebrate the students’ achievements, describing the event as “an inspiring showcase of excellence within the profession.”
Nick Walker said, “As Head of School, it was a proud moment to represent Bradford College at the ABDO’s graduation ceremony held in the magnificent setting of Canterbury Cathedral. Celebrating the achievements of our graduates in such a historic venue was truly inspiring. On behalf of all those involved in delivering Ophthalmic Dispensing, I extend our heartfelt congratulations and wish every graduate continued success in their careers as Dispensing Opticians.”
The College offers a range of specialist Level 6 qualifications designed to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in the optical industry. These include the Diploma available through both apprenticeship and blended learning routes, the BSc (Hons) degree, and a Contact Lens Diploma delivered via blended learning. With industry-relevant training, expert teaching, and strong employer links, Bradford College continues to play a key role in developing the next generation of optical professionals.
