A prestigious exhibition of artwork featuring extracts from a book by Art and Design Lecturer Carole Griffiths is celebrated this week.

The Interesting Times in Venice Celebration Event will give people the chance to find out more about the exhibition of work resulting from the Venice Art Biennale 2019. It includes Carole’s recently published book, Are You Ready?

Carole’s fellowship at Venice Art Biennale

Introducing her book, Carole said: “This is my journey through Venice.”

Carole is among 38 artists from across the UK who took part in the Venice Fellowships programme last summer. She spent one month at the Venice Art Biennale, a world-famous contemporary art festival held every two years and attracting millions of visitors from around the world. Carole faced fierce competition to be selected for a fellowship at the Biennale, where she carried out research and helped visitors understand the artworks.

Are You Ready?

Her creative response to the fellowship, Are You Ready? is on show at Interesting Times in Venice. The exhibition is at London Met’s School of Art, Architecture and Design. Each exhibit was developed by the artists who took part in a month-long steward-research fellowship in Venice and is based around the Biennale’s curatorial theme ‘May You Live in Interesting Times.’

On display, alongside Carole’s artwork, are paintings, photos, videos, prints and sculptures as well as QR codes to access online content and view zines and essays.

Elevating the everyday

Carole’s art elevates mundane, everyday objects, taking inspiration from domestic items such as kitchen utensils and clothes pegs.

In addition to Interesting Times in Venice, Carole has a sculpture featured as part of the Invasive Species Sculpture Trail at RHS Harlow Carr. Her piece, Reciprocal Encounter, shows domestic tools formed from plastic, hanging in balance, forked and split, disrupting the landscape to signify potential harm.
