Overview
If you are interested in human behaviour and have a desire to help people, this course is perfect for you. It combines high level counselling skills with psychological understanding to give you a range of insights and perspectives on human behaviour, problems and concerns. Exploring these issues within a variety of community settings will provide you with a fascinating and practical experience.
Counselling Theory and Practice Modules 1-5, which form part of the BA (Hons) Counselling and Psychology in Community Settings are Quality Checked by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

What You Will Learn
The course aims to provide you with the theoretical knowledge and development of independent study skills to succeed at Honours Degree level. You will develop a deeper understanding of the application of theory to practice and will acquire evaluation skills through the progressive building of research skills over all three years of the course, undertaking increasingly independent practitioner research activities in a range of modules. Study skills support is available to you in drop-in workshops and individual appointments.
This course is delivered through lecture, seminar, group work, group and individual tutorial support, personal study time, and provision of multi-media resources through the college.
You will interact with the curriculum through involvement in student led seminars, presentations and discussions. The development of independent learning and leadership skills, including self-evaluation and conscious awareness of effective learning techniques, is promoted through interactive teaching approaches such as personal tutorials, e-mail and Moodle.
You will have the opportunity to link theory to practice through a fieldwork placement. Lectures will communicate the theoretical content of the module to students; however, throughout delivery, and across all levels, you will be expected to relate theory to practice through practice-based observations and exercises, developing a deep understanding of the application of theory to practice.

Counselling Modules offer you the opportunity to develop a theoretical understanding as well as practical counselling skills. Through the learning process you will also enhance your self development.

Entry Requirements
Entry to this course requires 96 UCAS tariff points. Standard entry qualifications are passes in 5 GCSE subjects including 3 at GCSE Grade C or above (including both English and Maths) and two A levels, or the equivalent, such as AS levels, BTEC, GNVQ Advanced, or successful completion of an accredited Access course.
We require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and health check for admission to this course.
Direct entry into Level 6 is available for candidates with relevant Foundation Degrees or HND.
You will be invited for an interview and skills assessment prior to the offer of a place on the course.
The programme caters for a range of applicants and welcomes applications from students with skills acquired in practice in a variety of health and social welfare roles or on short courses.
We also consider individual applicants who can demonstrate relevant learning, work/voluntary experience, using our Recognition of Prior Learning process. Please contact the admission team for further information and support.
Assessment
A variety of assessment procedures will be used on your course, including: learning records, essays, presentations, assessment of practice, case study analysis, two examinations and independent project work. For Counselling Practice modules, self-reflection, peer and tutor feedback will form the basis of assessment.
Work Experience
You will undertake a fieldwork placement in Level 5 (Year 2) for three days a week over a 12-week period. By this time, other modules in the programme will have helped prepare you for this experience, which can be demanding but is invariably rewarding. A wide variety of fieldwork agencies and community settings are currently in use and we will work with you closely to find the placement opportunity that meets your needs.
Progression
Successful completion of this course can lead to progression to further study or employment within the Counselling and Psychology industry. Our graduates have gone on to work with substance misuse, homelessness, domestic violence and mental health. Others have gone on to join the police or train as social workers, counsellors, nurses and teachers. A number have progressed to postgraduate study to specialise in areas of counselling or psychology. The course offers a basis for progression towards relevant professional accreditation.
