Bradford College Hosts Third Annual Speed Mentoring Event

Last Friday, Bradford College proudly hosted its third annual Speed Mentoring Event at The Grove Restaurant in the David Hockney Building, welcoming students and professionals from across a wide range of industries for a morning of meaningful conversation, inspiration and connection.

Now firmly established in the College calendar, the event brought together learners and mentors for a series of fast‑paced, 10‑minute discussions designed to support students as they explore career aspirations, build confidence and reflect on their future pathways.

Mentors from sectors including business, education, law, sport, public services, energy and community organisations were paired randomly with students, allowing for diverse perspectives and honest, real‑world advice. Employers in attendance included representatives from Yorkshire Water, Bradford Council, the Race Equality Network, Parliament and the energy sector.

Real Conversations That Broaden Horizons

Each short interaction created space for students to ask questions, discuss challenges and hear first‑hand how career journeys can evolve over time. For many learners, the opportunity to speak openly with professionals helped demystify the world of work and challenge the idea that success follows a single, linear path.

One student reflected on the experience afterwards, saying:

“It was really useful because we got to hear so many different ideas and experiences. Everyone’s path was different and that helped me think more clearly about what I might want to do next.”

Mentors were encouraged to share not only their successes, but also the setbacks and lessons that shaped their careers, creating an open and supportive environment focused on life skills, resilience and personal growth.

Confidence, Language and Self‑Belief

A standout moment from the day came from Bradford Bulls’ Ian Stafford, whose advice on confidence and interview language resonated strongly with students.

“Instead of saying ‘I hope to be,’ say ‘I am’ or ‘I will,’” he said. “It’s a small change, but it shows confidence and belief in yourself.”

Students later echoed the impact of this advice during feedback discussions. One learner shared:

“I realised how important language is. Saying ‘I am’ instead of ‘I will’ makes you sound more confident — and helps you feel it too.”

Inspired by the Students

While the event was designed to inspire learners, many mentors found themselves equally moved by the students’ maturity, ambition and determination.

Reflecting on the conversations he had, one mentor noted:

“The maturity and drive these students showed was incredible. Some had clear goals, others were still figuring things out — but all showed real reflection and resilience.”

Melody Reed, one of the mentors at the event, described the experience as unexpectedly moving:

“I didn’t know what to expect, but I was massively shocked in the most positive way. Some students knew exactly where they were going, and others didn’t — and I really connected with those who didn’t. I could have done this all day. It’s really inspired me.”

Another employer added:

“What impressed me most was that many students already had a Plan A and a Plan B. At their age, that level of foresight is remarkable.”

Kaiser Nazir, Barrister at Park Plaza Plowden, highlighted the broader context in which many learners are navigating their futures:

“Our students often face social disadvantages, but what stood out was their determination to rise above them. They are resourceful, driven and committed to their futures — they’re not letting anything hold them back.”

A Two‑Way Opportunity

Alina, Vice Principal for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Bradford College, emphasised the dual value of the event — not just for students, but for employers as well.

“This is an extremely valuable experience for our learners, but it’s also hugely beneficial for employers,” she said.

“It gives industry professionals the chance to see first‑hand the resilience, creativity and potential of the future workforce. It’s a genuine win‑win.”

She also highlighted the importance of creating space for listening and reflection:

“Today isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about listening, sharing experiences and helping students find solutions for themselves. Career journeys are rarely straightforward, and it’s important young people hear that.”

Looking Ahead

With around six conversations per student, the speed mentoring format ensured broad exposure to different roles, experiences and perspectives. For many learners, the event sparked new ideas and opened doors to career paths they had not previously considered.

Reflecting on the day, Alina concluded:

“This event is about more than career advice. It’s about confidence, imagination and hearing real stories. The feedback from both students and mentors has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re already looking forward to welcoming even more partners next year.”

As the Speed Mentoring Event continues to grow year on year, Bradford College reaffirms its commitment to empowering students, strengthening employer relationships and supporting the next generation to realise their potential.
