Celebrating Success on the Dual ESOL Pathway at Bradford College
On Thursday 5th March, staff, participants and partners came together to celebrate the conclusion of the 12‑week Dual ESOL Pathway, led by Dr Cathy Clarkson.
The celebration brought together aspiring teachers, experienced practitioners and sector partners for an evening that showcased the creativity, collaboration and innovation at the heart of ESOL teacher development.
Trainees and tutors shared thoughtful poster presentations and lively Teachmeet sessions, demonstrating everything from innovative teaching approaches to practical classroom techniques. With guests from Migration Yorkshire, MESH and Bradford Council, the event highlighted the strong partnerships that continue to shape ESOL provision across the region.
Bringing Together New and Experienced ESOL Teachers
The Dual ESOL Pathway unites two distinct but complementary groups: Pathway A, designed for new teachers taking their first steps into ESOL, and Pathway B, for experienced practitioners who learn and refresh while guiding pathway A participants throughout the programme. The showcase offered a valuable opportunity for both groups to reconnect and reflect on their progress.
One mentor captured the spirit of the evening perfectly, saying, “It was a lovely evening, and it was amazing to reconnect with Saswasti and Rohullah and watch how much confidence they’ve gained since starting the course.”
A Community of Support and Professional Growth
Throughout the event, attendees praised the programme’s innovative structure, which encourages new and experienced teachers to learn from one another. This collaborative model has strengthened professional relationships, enhanced teaching practice and fostered genuine confidence among participants.
As another mentor reflected, “You did an amazing job creating the course and supporting everyone all the way through. To have a final session like yesterday was just the best.”
Trainees echoed this sense of achievement and community. One Pathway A participant shared, “I enjoyed tonight a lot. Thanks a lot for organising such an amazing event. Everything from the food to the venue and presentations, it was just great to be a part of.”
Strengthening ESOL Through Partnership and Collaboration
The evening also welcomed several external partners who work closely with Bradford College to enhance ESOL opportunities across the region. Julia Vidal from Migration Yorkshire opened the event with an insightful overview of their work and the purpose behind the funding that supports both trainees and practitioners. She was followed by Angela Palmer from MESH (Migrant English Support Hub), who introduced their Get Into Teaching ESOL resource, a valuable guide for anyone considering a future in the sector. Representatives from Bradford Council’s Employment & Skills team, alongside colleagues from the College’s ESOL and Adult & Community departments, further demonstrated the strong collaborative networks that underpin the programme’s success.
Showcasing Innovation in ESOL Teaching Practice
The presentations themselves offered a clear insight into the depth of learning achieved over the 12‑week course. Trainees and tutors showcased a diverse range of methods and techniques, including approaches such as Dogme and the Reflect Approach to ESOL. They also demonstrated practical tools like realia and Slido, alongside thoughtful strategies for teaching key language areas such as phrasal verbs and tenses. Together, these contributions highlighted the strong pedagogical development fostered by the Dual ESOL Pathway and the growing confidence of those taking part.
Shaping the Future of ESOL Education
The event showed how Bradford College continues to support the development of skilled, confident ESOL practitioners. The commitment and professionalism shown by trainees across both pathways highlight the value of the programme and the strong partnerships behind it. It also demonstrated the solid foundation the course provides for anyone looking to progress in the ESOL sector.
