Meet Lucy Ellerton, a figure skater and Hair and Beauty student on our 14–16 provision. This year, she has even had the opportunity to compete in events connected to the Olympics, balancing her training and competitions alongside her studies at Bradford College. She may glide across the ice with ease, but her journey to confidence and new opportunities began right here at Bradford College.
Finding Her Passion for Skating
“I took Hair and Beauty for myself, honestly. I hadn’t thought too much about what I wanted to do after the course. But skating is definitely my passion.”
Lucy first discovered skating through social media and by watching her younger sister take lessons.
“My mum’s friend introduced my little sister to ice skating, and I already wanted to try it after seeing videos of a skater I admired. So, when my sister started lessons, I decided to join her.”
Growing Confidence at Bradford College
Her tutor shared how both skating and studying Hair and Beauty at Bradford College have helped Lucy grow.
“Her confidence has grown tremendously. I remember how quiet she was at the open day, and now she’s really stepped out of her shell and built strong friendships.”
Looking Ahead: Studies and Skating
Lucy hopes to continue with Maths and English in September, but her main focus after completing the 14–16 provision is progressing further in skating.
“I’m determined to get more into skating. We only do two lessons a week at the moment, but I really want to improve and get better at what I do.”
For young people hoping to pursue a sport like skating, Lucy’s advice is simple: keep going.
“It’s going to be hard at first. I didn’t like my first lesson at all. But you have to try, because it gets easier, and you meet some really nice people along the way.”
Lucy also praised Bradford College for helping her balance both her studies and her sport.
“The college has been really supportive, especially with allowing time off for competitions.”
Competing and Looking Ahead
Alongside her studies, Lucy has several competitions coming up and is aiming high.
“I have a competition coming up soon, so I’m hoping to get gold. I do solo competitions, inclusive skating competitions, and sometimes ISU competitions.”
Lucy’s journey shows how far passion and the right support can take you. From a quiet student at an open day to a confident skater competing on the ice, she’s grown into someone who knows what she wants and is determined to chase it.
