From June 17th to June 23rd, Bradford College joins a host of educational institutions and community organisations across the UK in celebrating Refugee Week.
This annual event recognises the invaluable contributions of refugees to the UK and promotes understanding between diverse communities. This year’s theme, “Our Home,” reminds us that home is more than just a physical place; it’s the familiar sights, sounds, tastes, and traditions that make us feel at home.
In 2022, Bradford College achieved the College of Sanctuary status, a testament to our outstanding work with refugees and asylum seekers. As part of a network of colleges across the UK, Bradford College has created a welcoming and safe environment for those seeking refuge, including asylum-seeking and refugee families. For many displaced individuals, colleges are often the first place they receive support and education in the UK.
At Bradford College, we understand the vital role we play in helping these students gain the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in their new home.
Our new ‘Bradford College in Your Community’ initiative, provides support in essential literacy, numeracy, and digital skills, to ensure these students can successfully integrate and excel academically and socially.
Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) department plays a crucial role in this effort.
With classroom instruction and practical applications like theatre and performing arts, we help students develop their English language proficiency in an engaging and supportive environment. Additionally, partnerships with organisations like Yorkshire Dales provide these students with opportunities to engage in outdoor activities, develop teamwork skills, improve well-being, and encourage social integration.
Another key project put in place by the College is the Welcome Cafe, located at The Millside Community Centre. This communal space brings together students, local asylum seekers, and refugees over their shared love for plant-based food, promoting a sense of community and providing a platform for culinary talents and skills development.
Reflecting on the importance of Refugee Week, ESOL lecturer Esther Wilkey said,
For many of our students who have been forced to leave their homes, Bradford College has become a sanctuary —a support network and a family. They have become an integral part of our community, enriching it with their unique qualities and contributions.
In keeping with the spirit of Refugee Week, our ESOL students will host a Refugee Day event on Thursday, June 20th, featuring their own rendition of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. This showcase will not only display the students’ artistic abilities but also demonstrate their growing command of the English language.
