Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses

If you’re considering a career in teaching, but feel you need to improve your subject knowledge, then you’ll benefit from one of our Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses.

Bradford College, in partnership with VIDLEARN®, delivers a range of Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses which allow you to change from primary teaching to secondary, secondary to FE, or change the subject you want to teach.

Information

Funding for 2025/2026 is now closed and will re-open again in October 2026.

To apply for one of our SKE courses, you will need to have been offered a place on an Initial Teacher Training course with successful completion of an SKE a condition of that offer.

It is important that you discuss with your provider which of our courses is most suited to your needs and have a clear idea of the duration of the SKE required.

Courses are delivered by professionals in education online, to ensure that you are fully prepared for your Inital Teacher Training year.

Government-funded SKE Courses

The following courses are fully funded by the Department for Education, providing you meet the eligibility criteria. Subjects include: 

  • Computing  
  • French  
  • Mathematics  
  • Physics  
  • Spanish  

Full and part-time routes are available.  

Eligibility

If you have been accepted onto one of the following routes into teaching via School Direct, SCITT, PGCE or Teach First training routes, which states that a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course is a condition, then the above courses are available to you.

Duration

Each of the above courses are delivered as follows: 

  • 8 weeks – 200 hours of study – if you need to boost or refresh your subject knowledge to GCSE level 
  • 12 weeks – 300 hours of study – if you need to boost or refresh your subject knowledge to GCSE level (inc. KS2/3)
  • 16 weeks – 400 hours of study – if you need to boost or refresh your subject knowledge of A Level 
  • 20 weeks – 500 hours of study – a short boost to your KS3 knowledge and subject knowledge of A level  
  • 24 weeks – 600 hours of study – for candidates needing to boost knowledge from GCSE to A level 
  • 28 weeks – 700 hours of study – our longest course for those needing subject knowledge development from KS3 through to GCSE and A Level. 

How to Apply

You will apply for all SKE courses via VidLearn. 

Your application is shared with Bradford College to be checked and confirmed as quickly as possible. Please note that a check with your ITT Provider is necessary as part of this process.  

As soon as your application is confirmed you will be sent your access details and instructions for starting the course.

Who is VIDLEARN?

VIDLEARN® is the UK’s leading platform for Distance Learning Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses for those thinking of training to teach one of the shortage subjects.  You can start your VIDLEARN® course at any time during the academic year and learn at your own pace. 

Following completion of the course, trainees enjoy 2 years of additional free access to the resources. 

Additionally, our modern foreign language students get a free optional subscription to Babbel® Professional to help with vocabulary if needed. 

Other SKE courses

We offer the following SKE courses for students on other ITT courses, who will need to pay course fees:

  • Biology
  • English
  • Religious Education

Each course costs £200.00 per week.  

What’s included? 

Trainees will be encouraged to communicate with each other during the course through a very easy-to-use forum which can be used between trainees studying the same subject.
