Previous Experience
Cathy has taught in FE for over 20 years, after returning from teaching in China she taught ESOL and basic IT in adult and community and a small FE college, before developing the CELTA course for the FE context and moving into Initial Teacher Education (ITE) delivering a bespoke ESOL L3 Award in Education, the Cert Ed/PGCE in Lifelong Learning, and the L5 Observation in Teaching and Learning.
Teaching Responsibilities
Cathy leads on part-time pre-service teacher training and post-secondary English, ESOL and Literacy pathway. She is also programme lead for the Trinity CertTESOL, which is an ESOL subject specialist qualification for those wanting to teach aboard or teach in the UK ESOL context. She also supervises undergraduate dissertations.
Professional Interests
Cathy is doing a part-time EdD focused on action research exploring the use of text-chat as a backchannel during teaching practice on the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). Her doctorate research challenges the concept of classroom observation, shifting the focus from being observed to the while-observation experiences of the observer. Her research suggests the affordances of the text-chat and a low-guidance approach during the observation supports an environment for community formation and proposes a social stance while-observing. The social stance involves CELTA trainees drawing on ‘double-seeing’, where they observe others through the lens of their own practice, while being mindful to make worthwhile contributions to the text-chat that supports others’ learning.
If traditional research asks ‘what’s happening here?’, action research asks ‘how can I improve what’s happening here?’, and Cathy is positioned as a learner along with her trainees and she talks passionately about the importance of being a lifelong learner and the benefits of engaging in action research (Clarkson 2023). She has undertaken numerous practitioner research projects throughout her career (Clarkson 2020), and promotes the value of FE tutors not only doing research but disseminating this to raise the profile of Further Education. She has presented at a variety of conferences, including CARN (Collaborative Action Research Network), IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language), and BERA (British Education Research Association)
She is an active member NATECLA (National Association for Teaching English and other Community Languages to Adults). She was Chair of the Yorkshire and Humberside branch from 2012-2017, and she continues to support both the branch and national NATECLA. She is interested in establishing an ESOL ITE working parting, both nationally and regionally.
Cathy co-convenes the ESOL research community with Dr Kathryn Sidaway (Sidaway (n.d). They aim to connect ESOL teacher with research through an online community, and they won the prize for the best 15-minute presentation at the International BAAL conference in 2023.
