Our Changing Planet: Students Bring Environmental Message to Life Through Art

Our Producing Academy students have transformed a public space into a powerful visual statement on the climate crisis, unveiling a striking collaborative mural as part of their project Our Changing Planet.

The eight-week project saw 28 Level 2 Art and Design students explore the impact of human activity on the natural world, tackling themes such as pollution, deforestation and wildlife extinction. Guided by lecturers Kulvinder Reehal and Rich Jones, the initiative encouraged students to reflect on environmental responsibility while developing their creative practice.

Working together, students researched key issues, developed concepts and scaled their designs onto a large corridor wall, creating a bold, immersive mural that captures the urgency of the planet’s changing condition. The space now serves as both an exhibition and a conversation starter for students, staff and visitors alike.

Kulvinder Reehal, Art & Design Lecturer, said:
“This project has been about more than just creating artwork, it’s about giving students a platform to explore real-world issues and express their perspectives. The mural reflects not only their creativity, but also their growing awareness of the environmental challenges we all face.”

Alongside the mural, students expanded their ideas into three-dimensional pieces using recycled materials. This multi-disciplinary approach allowed them to experiment across illustration, sculpture, printmaking and digital techniques, while reinforcing the importance of sustainability in both message and method.

Level 2 student Martina Shifari contributed a piece to the mural that highlights the impact of industrial pollution on smaller species. Reflecting on the project, she said:
“It’s making a good point because people don’t always understand what’s really happening. Through the artwork, they can learn more about how they can help and what they can do to prevent it.”

The project has not only strengthened students’ artistic skills, but also encouraged collaboration and critical thinking, with many drawing inspiration from each other’s work.

Bradford College Sustainability Lead Chelsie Naylor added:
“Projects like this are vital in helping young people connect creativity with climate awareness. It’s inspiring to see students using their voices and talents to highlight environmental issues and encourage positive change across our community.”

By combining creativity with purpose, Our Changing Planet stands as a testament to the power of student voice – and a reminder that the next generation is ready to take action.
