Bradford College Welcomes Software Development Alumni Speakers and FAST Solutions for AI Masterclass Event

Last Wednesday, Software Development Level 3 students at Bradford College took part in an inspiring event that combined real-life success stories with future-focused learning.

Three alumni returned to share their progression to the University of Leeds and successful careers, followed by an AI masterclass delivered by FAS Solution.

The visit brought to life the College’s Start Here, Go Anywhere message, with all three former students having progressed from Bradford College to the University of Leeds before securing strong roles in the sector.

Usman Sherdil, Hamzah Tahir and Mohammed Abbas spoke candidly about how the course built their technical foundations and confidence, while the FAST Solution session introduced students to emerging AI technologies shaping the future of computing.

Giving Back and Inspiring the Next Generation

The alumni shared their experiences of studying at Bradford College and how it prepared them for higher education and employment. Speaking to current students, one explained how the foundations they built on the course played a key role in their success: “As long as you have the foundational skills that you’re learning here and at university, that’s what employers want.”

They highlighted the importance of making the most of projects, both at college and university, as a way to stand out to employers. One alumnus advised, “Whatever projects you’re working on, make sure you can explain them and show the impact you’ve had – that’s what helps you get a role.”

From Bradford College to the University of Leeds

All three speakers progressed to study Computer Science at the University of Leeds, demonstrating clear progression opportunities from the course. They spoke honestly about the transition, explaining that university requires independence and self-motivation.

“It’s very independent,” one shared, emphasising that students must take ownership of their learning. However, they reassured learners that Bradford College had prepared them well, particularly through the technical skills and discipline developed during the Software Development Level 3 course.

Real Career Success in Computing

Now working in a range of professional roles, including database and technology-focused positions, the alumni highlighted how their skills directly transfer into the workplace. One speaker described their current role, saying they regularly apply SQL and work with “the latest tools, technology and software platforms.”

They also discussed the flexibility of careers in tech, including remote working and varied career pathways, helping students understand the wide range of opportunities available after studying computing.

Key Advice for Current Students

Throughout the session, the alumni encouraged students to stay focused and take advantage of every opportunity. They stressed the value of hard work, with one speaker stating, “Put your head down, work hard, and you can get there – no matter where you come from.”

They also highlighted that while university is a great progression route, success comes from the effort students put in, their projects, and their willingness to keep learning.

Exploring the Future with AI

After the inspirational talk from Usman, Hamzah and Mohammed, —— from FAS Solution followed this up with an engaging and forward-thinking masterclass on AI and its growing impact on the computing industry.

The session introduced students to the latest developments in artificial intelligence, showing how emerging tools and technologies are already transforming the way developers work. Building on the alumni’s advice about strong foundations and practical skills, the masterclass encouraged students to explore AI, experiment with new tools, and consider how these technologies can enhance their future careers in tech.

This inspiring event gave our current Software Development Level 3 students first-hand insight into progression routes, career success, and the future of AI.

Course Leader, Rashad Ayub said,

“I’d like to thank our alumni and Fakhar Anwar Safeer from FAS Solutions for giving their time and sharing such valuable insights with our students. Events like this truly highlight the power of collaboration, inspiration, and real-world learning. It’s fantastic to see our former students giving back and motivating the next generation, while also exposing learners to cutting-edge developments like AI. I’m incredibly proud of our students for their engagement and enthusiasm, and I’m confident that experiences like this will continue to shape their future success in the tech industry”.
