Bradford College Brings Community Together for Ramadan Iftar Events

Bradford College marks the close of Ramadan this week, bringing our community together in a celebration of unity and belonging through a series of special Iftar events across campuses.

Iftar, the meal Muslims eat at sunset to break their daily fast during Ramadan, is often a shared, social occasion. To reflect this, the events welcomed staff, students, and partners, creating a space where both Muslims and non-Muslims could come together to break fast.

These well-established events have become an important part of the College calendar, highlighting our ongoing commitment to inclusion. Bradford College strives to foster an environment where every voice is heard, every perspective is valued, and everyone feels a true sense of belonging.

This year, the Personal Development & Students’ Union team hosted the annual Iftar events at the David Hockney Building, welcoming 117 students, as well as at Bowling Back Lane, where a further 85 students attended.

Whether fasting or not, students shared the experience with respect and showed support and understanding throughout. From Qur’an recitation, student-led Nasheeds, the Sunnah food table, and students stepping in to serve one another – both evenings embodied the Bradford College community spirit of inclusion and mutual respect.

Umar Rafique, Personal Development Team Leader, said:

“Ramadan is a time of reflection, shared experience, and connection, and that spirit really came through. I want to say a huge thank you to our team and all other departments and staff who went above and beyond across both evenings to bring everything together!  We are also grateful to MyLahores, Fortune Cookie, JTI Community Fridge for their generous support and contributions in helping make these events possible.”

Adult catering student, Zulfiqar Karim, said:

“It was wonderful for the students to come together under the guidance of chef Andy and cook different dishes the students weren’t used to. We had a full house, and everybody seemed to enjoy the food, but more importantly, was the coming together of people, understanding each other, and the importance of Ramadan. It was fabulous to be involved from start to finish.”

Furkan added:

“The Big Iftar is a powerful reminder of how food and faith can bring people together. At Bradford College, we’re proud to host an event that strengthens community cohesion by welcoming people of all backgrounds to share in the spirit of Ramadan and enjoy the Iftar meal prepared by our fabulous catering students. This event embodies our mission of working together to transform lives.”
