If you enjoy working with people, you will find a career in the Public Services very satisfying. This course will give you a realistic introduction to work in any of the Uniformed Public Services including: Fire, Police, Ambulance, Prison, Customs & Excise and the Armed Services (British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines). The course is exciting, interesting and varied, as it combines classroom-based study with practical and outdoor activities.

There will be opportunities throughout the course for you to improve your Maths and English skills and to use appropriate computer software. Outdoor activities are essential elements of the course as are Skills for Life/Functional Skills IT. Day and residential visits are also an important part of this course. You will learn through lectures, work-based assignments, projects and case studies based on real events, IT workshops and practical activities.
To be awarded the Level 2 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services, learners are required to successfully complete 7 mandatory units and 2 optional units. Mandatory units:

Entry to this course requires a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including GCSE English and Maths at grade 3. You should have a moderate level of physical fitness and an enthusiasm for exercise. You must provide a satisfactory reference. You will be invited to participate in a two day assessment that includes Maths and English tests, physical assessment and self-discipline. We welcome applications from mature students who can demonstrate to us, by evidence of other studies or experience, that they have the capability to satisfactorily complete and benefit from the course. English and/or Maths will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at Grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course. Please note you will be required to purchase and wear a uniform and the course will include compulsory trips that you will have to pay for. You will also need to pay £60 costs for travel during outdoor activities. A pair of walking boots are essential to do this course and water proof clothing is advisable for your own comfort.
Your progress and work will be internally assessed and as well as an externally quality assured portfolio of evidence.
You will have the opportunity to attend lectures and discussions with representatives from various Public Service organisations as well as visits such as Police Riot Training and British Army day and residential activities. You can also join the College’s Sports Academies and gym as well as participate in Public Services sports competitions. Some of your study will take place within the local community and in the local countryside.
After successfully completing a BTEC Level 2 diploma, you can progress onto Level 3 and 4 diplomas and then onto Higher Education if you choose to. A firefighter has the potential to earn £22,000 – £42,000+ a year. A soldier has the potential to earn £15,670 – £35,150+ a year. A police officer has the potential to earn £20,000 – £60,000+ a year.
