Skill’s you’ll develop:
- Working Safely – Learn how to follow health and safety rules in a busy workshop environment.
- Using Engineering Tools and Machines – Get confident using real tools and equipment used in the engineering industry.
- Welding Techniques – Gain hands-on experience in MMA, MIG, and oxy-acetylene welding methods.
- Metalwork and Fabrication – Build skills in sheet metalwork, platework, and fabrication tasks.
- Fitting and Assembly – Learn how to carry out basic fitting tasks and mechanical assembly work.
- Reading Engineering Drawings – Understand how to read and use technical drawings for real jobs.
- Problem Solving – Develop the ability to think through tasks and fix issues as they come up.
- Workplace Skills – Grow skills like teamwork, time management, and communication—important for any job.
Core modules:
- Working in Engineering
- Engineering Principles
- Principles of welding
- Producing components using MIG Welding
- Producing components using Sheet Metal
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a must have for this course.
You will need:
- Safety boots and fire-retardant overalls. These will be provided should you meet the conditions of the bursary*.

Entry to this course requires GCSE English Language and Maths at a grade 3 and a Level 1 qualification in Engineering.
You must successfully complete both mandatory assessment components:
- Two online exams
- Assignments – Two per year
- Employer involvement activities

For this course you must undertake employer involvement activities, where you’ll dive into the world of work and gain the skills employers are looking for.
With this, you’ll have hands-on experience to showcase on your CV, showing your industry skills to employers.
After completing this course, you’ll be ready to pursue:
- Progression to our Level 3 Engineering course or T Level in Engineering: Design & Development.
- Apprenticeships like fabrication, welding, mechanical engineering, or maintenance.
- Roles such as Engineering Operative or Fabrication Assistant.
