Overview

Our Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery course provides you with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to continue your career in the construction industry as a craftsperson in wood occupations. This course blends theoretical learning with hands‑on experience, preparing you for further study and employment. As an aspiring carpenter or joiner working in domestic, commercial, or industrial environments, you will develop a strong understanding of the manufacturing and installation of structural and nonstructural timber products and components, first fix and second fix operations, and a range of setting‑out and installation methods. You’ll also gain expertise in industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices. Upon successful completion, you will be ready to take the next steps in your career.
This course includes project‑based learning that embeds GCSE Maths and GCSE English directly into theoretical and practical, vocational tasks through a contextualised model. This ensures learners develop relevant, essential and applied skills that align with the expectations of the construction industry and support their long‑term progression.

You will learn about the importance of health and safety in the carpentry and joinery industry, along with the core principles behind modern timber construction. This includes understanding structural components, fixing methods, setting‑out techniques, and the theory behind first‑ and second‑fix operations. You’ll also develop your knowledge of the different types of materials, the use of hand tools and basic mower tools, measuring and marking out materials accurately and calculations used in contemporary carpentry and joinery work. You will also take advantage of learning about green skills and sustainability, with a strong focus on energy‑efficient building methods, responsible material selection, and modern low‑carbon construction practices. This includes an awareness of sustainable timber products, smart construction technologies, and environmentally conscious site procedures. Applicants and progressing learners must have GCSE Maths and GCSE English at a grade 3 as a minimum and successfully completed a Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery qualification.

You’ll develop and showcase your practical abilities in our carpentry and joinery workshop and dedicated assessment areas, alongside completing online multiple‑choice exams to confirm your understanding of carpentry and joinery theory. During the course, you’ll carry out a variety of practical tasks, including setting out and constructing structural components, installing first‑ and second‑fix elements, and producing high‑quality joinery items using a range of materials and techniques. You’ll also put key health and safety practices into action, including risk assessment, manual handling, and the correct use of power tools, hand tools, ladders, and mobile tower scaffolding.

You will undertake a minimum of two meaningful employer encounters and two employer‑led masterclasses, all designed to develop your soft and foundational skills. Throughout the course, you will partake in tailored workplace visits and industry insight events, explore specific career pathways and gain a clear understanding of workplace expectations. You will also undertake mock interviews, CV development activities and receive guidance and support from industry professionals to help you prepare for your next steps.

Successful completion of this course can lead to progression onto our Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery, as well as opportunities for employment or an apprenticeship. Careers include: Site Carpenter Bench Joiner Shop Fitter Kitchen Fitter Modular Build Installer Wood Machinist

Other Costs: Other Costs: When working in the Carpentry & Joinery workshops, you will need to wear safety boots with steel toe caps and a high‑visibility vest. Please make sure you have access to this equipment before starting the course, as it is essential for taking part in practical sessions safely.You may also be able to receive support through the 16–19 Bursary. This can help with the cost of kit, course‑related equipment and resources, including IT devices, connectivity and textbooks or study materials.
