This introductory qualification is designed for learners to develop kitchen skills and health and safety awareness. To develop knife skills and preparation methods, the use of everyday ingredients and developing knowledge of how to use them. Each week you will undergo a placement at Cottingley community centre as a group running the café and kitchen. We will travel as a group on public transport. During the year you will learn transferable and sector specific skills which will enhance your progression for future learning. Each week you will prepare and cook dishes which have been demonstrated to you. You will be shown how to put ingredients together. You will be working in a professional kitchen using equipment and developing your individual skills for progression. You will have the opportunity for a weekly placement developing and learning new skills. These will include customer service, team work, money skills. Trips and visits and guest speakers to help enrich your learning experience. The course is based on a Programme of Study which consists of:

There are no entry requirements for this level apart from an interest in the specified subject and the ability to commit to positive behaviours and attendance. English and/or Maths will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course.
You will be assessed through a range of methods that include coursework, assignments and presentations.
30 hours of relevant experience of work are included in the course. Our students work in partnership with the National Citizens Service (NCS) programme which helps to develop key employment skills and behaviours needed for progression to work.
Successful completion of this course can prepare you for progression into careers in Catering and Hospitality. You will have developed the core skills needed to work in this environment.
