Course overview

Our official City and Guilds Level 1 course gives you the skills needed to become an apprentice Plumber. Much like electrical, you can chose to work for yourself, fitting central heating, repairing boilers and putting new bathrooms in – or you can take advantage of our partnerships with utilities companies and go to the industrial side of things and specialise in fitting pipework that needs a crane to lift it! With a big focus on energy efficiency and the environment, there’s never been a better time to train as a modern plumber.

What you'll study

Our pathway will take you from working on cold water systems at Level 1 through to becoming a heating engineer working on gas systems at Level 3. That’s where the money is! As we teach you these skills, we will show you how to install the modern alternatives – such as solar thermal and ground/air source heat pumps so that your skills are cutting edge and future proofed. The industry is changing so quickly – and new technology is coming out all of the time – so we work with employers across Bradford to make sure what we are teaching you is fully up to date and has real value to companies when you go to work for them.

Assessment

We have two state of the art workshops that are set up to simulate all the different scenarios you might encounter in real life. We will train you to problem solve and apply your skills to different situations so that you are always prepared for the job.

Entry requirements

You will be interviewed to assess your suitability for the course.

You will also take an assessment for English and Maths.

You must achieve a minimum of Entry Level 3 in both subjects.

Work experience

Our plumbing courses teach you the traditional ways of working and the most modern renewable energy systems - so whether you're working on an old building, or a brand new skyscraper - you have the skills needed to get the job done.

Next steps

You will be required to wear safety boots with steel toe caps and hi-vis vest when working in the College workshops. Successful completion of a Level 1 course can lead onto Level 2 and 3 courses. Your course may include work experience or a work placement that could lead to the offer of a part-time or casual work, or you might work outside of your studies. A plumber has the potential to earn anywhere between £12K and £40 per year. Career opportunities are available through large contractors and smaller specialist employers in the public and private sectors. You could also train to become your own boss and become self-employed. Our students benefit from local site visits and trips to construction companies, such as our award-winning local partner Priestley Construction. Our Careers Guidance Team can assist you with choosing the right course and thinking about where this might take you in the future.
