“I always knew I wanted to go into construction,” Zara explains, “but I wasn’t sure which area.” What attracted Zara to the T Level course was the flexibility. “The good thing about my course is that it teaches you multiple disciplines, so you can explore different paths and figure out what suits you best.”
When choosing where to study, Zara felt that Bradford College stood out from other sixth forms and colleges.
“A lot of places tend to push you down the university route,” she says. “But Bradford College really encourages you to get out into the real world and gain practical experience, which is something I really wanted.”
As part of her T Level, Zara is completing an industry placement with Morgan Sindall Construction, working on the new Junction Mills project for the College.
After the project won two carbon awards and secured £10,000 in funding, Zara and two other students were given the opportunity to design a student social outdoor space, an experience she describes as both exciting and rewarding.
During her placement, Zara has gained valuable experience across a range of projects.
“I’ve worked on a biodiverse project, learning about the Bradford Beck, as well as planning and project management,” she says. She has also supported work on the Junction Mills project, developing her understanding of regulations, health and safety, and design processes.
Zara is now considering her next steps within the industry.
“I’m thinking about going into quantity surveying or project management,” she explains, “and hopefully progressing onto a degree apprenticeship.”
Zara strongly recommends T Levels to future students.
“If you don’t want to sit in a classroom all the time or focus purely on exams, I’d definitely recommend a T Level,” she says.
She is also passionate about encouraging more women into construction. “It’s an amazing career, but a lot of women feel hesitant because it’s male-dominated. That shouldn’t hold anyone back.”
Through her own journey, Zara hopes she is helping to break down barriers.
“I like to think I am breaking stereotypes,” she says. “I always encourage my sisters and their friends to consider construction, it’s a great career with strong opportunities, and there’s nothing to be afraid of.”
