New Hybrid ESOL Course Helps Students Explore Future Careers

Students on Bradford College’s new Hybrid ESOL programme are combining English language learning with vocational study. The approach helps them develop career-focused skills alongside their ESOL qualification.

Launched in September, the programme gives Entry 3 ESOL students the chance to study a vocational subject alongside English. Students can choose from Construction, Science or IT. This allows them to explore a potential career area while continuing to develop their language skills.

The programme aims to give students practical experience. It also helps them understand possible career pathways at an early stage.

The 24 students currently enrolled study ESOL together before joining their chosen vocational area. Construction students experience different trade disciplines, including carpentry and joinery, plumbing and brickwork. Science students study biology, chemistry and physics. IT students develop digital skills and learn to use Microsoft and Google tools.

Rachid Meftah, Course Leader, explained that the programme helps students make informed decisions about their future.

“The idea is to give students the opportunity to practise professional skills alongside studying ESOL. It gives them a good foundation for choosing a future pathway and helps them understand what different careers involve before they specialise. Students can explore subjects they are interested in and gain hands-on experience while continuing to develop their English skills.”

Developing Skills and Technical Vocabulary

Alongside developing practical skills, students also learn technical vocabulary linked to their chosen subject areas.

Student Hemn, who chose Construction, said the course has introduced him to new terminology.

“We’re doing carpentry, and construction. I’ve learned new words like tape measure and hammer.”

In a recent plumbing session, students chatted with their tutor Steve Mercer using terms such as “copper pipe” and “copper cutter” as they practised new skills, demonstrating how vocational learning can reinforce English language development.

Students studying IT have also highlighted the benefits of combining digital skills with ESOL.

One student said:

“It helps us a lot. When I came here, I didn’t know how to save files in OneDrive. My teacher showed me how to do it and now I can.”

Applying English in Real-World Situations

Rachid said one of the key benefits is the opportunity to apply English skills in real situations. Students are not limited to learning language in the classroom.

“Combining theory with application is one of the ways that enhances ESOL learning. Students are using English in a meaningful, real-world experience. They’re not just learning English. They’re using it to communicate, take part in practical activities and work with their tutors.”

Preparing for Future Progression

The programme also offers progression opportunities beyond Entry 3. There is currently no Level 1 Hybrid ESOL programme. However, students can continue studying ESOL alongside vocational courses in separate classes. This allows them to develop both their language skills and career aspirations.

Although the programme is still in its first year, feedback has been positive. Many students enjoy learning new skills while exploring future career options.

Rachid added:

“I can see that students are learning new things, enjoying the experience and wanting to continue. The course is helping them think about their future and the different opportunities available to them.”

The Hybrid ESOL programme gives students the opportunity to develop English language skills alongside practical subject knowledge, helping them explore future study and career options.
