Ahamad is Building Skills and Confidence at Bradford College through ESOL, English and Maths

Ahamad Al Alowji  is currently studying ESOL, English and Maths at Bradford College.

In less than two years, he has made strong progress, building both his academic skills and confidence while becoming an active member of the College community.

Ahamad describes his experience in simple but powerful terms: “It’s so enjoyable. I like my class, I like my teacher – I love my teacher – and I like my classmates especially.”

This sense of belonging has been central to his success, helping him settle quickly and get the most out of his studies.

Developing English, Maths and Confidence

Through his ESOL and English and Maths courses, Ahamad has developed essential language and numeracy skills that are helping him move forward with confidence. He is particularly proud of how far he has come in a short amount of time.

“I’m so proud of my progress. I learned a lot on this course,” he says.

The combination of supportive teaching, practical learning and a welcoming environment has enabled Ahamad to grow not just academically, but personally too. His improved communication skills have made a real difference to his everyday life and future ambitions.

Real-World Experience at the Alhambra Theatre

One of the highlights of Ahamad’s time at Bradford College has been the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). Ahamad secured a volunteer role at the Alhambra Theatre, where he worked alongside professionals on lighting and technical support.

Reflecting on the experience, he shares:
“I worked with the company for almost a week. I gained a lot of experience and tried something new. I was so excited because I grew – and it was fun.”

This opportunity allowed Ahamad to explore a new interest, build practical skills and gain insight into a professional working environment. It’s an example of how Bradford College goes beyond the classroom to provide meaningful enrichment opportunities.

Looking Ahead: Future Goals and Ambitions

Ahamad is focused on continuing his education and building on the strong foundation he has developed. His next step is to progress onto further qualifications, with clear goals already in mind.

“Hopefully I’ll do GCSE and Science Level 1,” he explains.

He is also inspired by his experience at the Alhambra and hopes to explore similar opportunities in the future. His growing confidence and willingness to try new things demonstrate his readiness to take on new challenges.

Recognition for Outstanding Conduct and Achievement

Ahamad’s commitment, leadership and positive attitude have been recognised through a Bradford College Star Award.

Nominated as a class representative, Ahamad has taken his responsibilities seriously, actively supporting his peers by reaching out to students who are absent and encouraging them to attend lessons. His dedication to learning is clear, regularly completes additional homework to deepen his understanding.

Ahamad is already demonstrating the skills and determination needed to progress onto GCSE English and Maths. Beyond the classroom, he fully embraces college life, attending extra-curricular activities and volunteering to take a leading role in the Bradford College production of Hamlet. In this role, he not only participates enthusiastically but also supports and encourages less confident students to get involved.

His passion for backstage production has driven him to seek out valuable work experience opportunities. Alongside community volunteering, Ahamad successfully secured a full-time placement shadowing the Matthew Bourne Dance Company’s lighting and sound technicians during their production of The Red Shoes at the Alhambra Theatre.

Ahamad’s determination, leadership and willingness to support others make him a truly deserving award winner – and an inspiring member of the Bradford College community.
