Jacek studied ESOL at Bradford College, progressing from Entry Level 3 to Level 1 before moving on to GCSE English and Maths, which supported his route into teaching and leadership.
When Jacek Mleczko arrived in the UK from Poland in 2014, he didn’t speak any English. Despite holding a Chemistry degree and working as a football manager in Poland, he initially found himself working night shifts in a warehouse, unable to move into a job that matched his qualifications or experience.
Determined to rebuild his career, he knew he had to begin by learning English, a decision that led him to Bradford College and ultimately changed the course of his life.
Starting Again: Building Confidence Through ESOL
In 2015, encouraged by a friend, Jacek visited Bradford College for an English assessment. Even taking that first step felt overwhelming.
“My biggest barrier was coming to the College in the first place. I was scared I wouldn’t understand the questions. But the staff were very supportive and assessed my level so I could start in the right place.”
He began at ESOL Entry Level 3 before progressing to Level 1. The part‑time evening classes allowed him to continue working as a Science Technician at Dixons McMillan Academy during the day.
The ESOL course helped him develop essential speaking, reading and writing skills, alongside the confidence to use English in daily life and at work.
“When I started, I could only introduce myself. The ESOL course helped me learn how to analyse texts, write extended tasks, prepare presentations, and answer questions. It supported every part of my English learning.
“And luckily for me my course was free – it wasn’t for everyone but the majority of those on my course were fully funded.”
He also benefitted from personalised teaching, small class sizes and access to the College library and study spaces, all of which helped him keep up with assignments and improve quickly.
Taking the Next Step: GCSE Success and New Opportunities
With improved language skills, Jacek began to see new possibilities. His school recognised his passion and potential and encouraged him to pursue teaching. But to work as a qualified teacher in the UK, he needed GCSE English and Maths.
Thanks to the strong foundation built at Bradford College, Jacek moved on to GCSE-level study, and successfully completed both subjects.
“There was a big gap between ESOL Level 1 and GCSE, but Bradford College prepared me well. The staff gave me confidence and the knowledge I needed.”
A New Career: From Technician to Assistant Head of Science
With stronger English, new qualifications and support from his school, Jacek transitioned into teaching. His dedication paid off, and over time he progressed from trainee teacher to Assistant Head of Science at Dixons McMillan Academy.
“Becoming Assistant Head of Science has given me so much. Without Bradford College, I would never have been able to start this journey.”
Why Jacek Recommends Bradford College for ESOL
Jacek strongly recommends Bradford College to anyone wanting to improve their English or build a new life in the UK:
“If people are struggling or want to improve their skills, Bradford College will support them. The ESOL course helped me build my English, my confidence, and my future.”
A Story That Inspires
From arriving in the UK unable to speak English, to becoming a senior leader in a secondary school science department, Jacek’s story shows how transformative education can be.
With determination, support and the right opportunities, he rebuilt his confidence, retrained for a new career, and achieved his long‑term goals, starting with his very first ESOL class at Bradford College.
