Overview

Our Building Services Engineering (BSE) Foundation course provides you with the essential knowledge and core skills needed to begin your journey towards a career in the building services industry. This academically focused programme blends theoretical understanding with introductory practical experience, preparing you for progression onto the T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction, where you will choose to specialise in either Electrical Installation or Plumbing and Heating.
Throughout the course, you will develop a strong grounding in the scientific and technical principles that underpin modern building services. This includes an introduction to electrical and plumbing systems, safe working practices, installation methods, and the materials, tools, and calculations used across the sector. You will explore key concepts such as electrical circuit theory, basic wiring systems, pipework principles, heating and hot water fundamentals, and the role of building services in creating safe, efficient, and sustainable environments.

Applicants must have GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language at a grade 4 as a minimum or equivalent.

Your progress will be evaluated through a combination of practical tasks, knowledge checks, and professional behaviours to ensure you are fully prepared for progression to the T Level programmes. All assessments are designed to mirror the expectations, standards, and learning approaches of the T Level, providing a strong platform for success.

You will undertake a minimum of two meaningful employer encounters and two employer‑led masterclasses, all designed to develop your soft and foundational skills. Throughout the course, you will partake in tailored workplace visits and industry insight events, explore specific career pathways and gain a clear understanding of workplace expectations. You will also undertake mock interviews, CV development activities and receive guidance and support from industry professionals to help you prepare for your next steps.

Successful completion of this course can lead to progression onto our T Level in Building Services Engineering in Construction (Electrical Installation or Plumbing and Heating occupational specialsms), as well as opportunities for employment or an apprenticeship.

Other Costs: Other Costs: When working in the Electrical workshops, you will need to wear safety boots with steel toe caps and a high‑visibility vest. Please make sure you have access to this equipment before starting the course, as it is essential for taking part in practical sessions safely.You may also be able to receive support through the 16–19 Bursary. This can help with the cost of kit, course‑related equipment and resources, including IT devices, connectivity and textbooks or study materials.
