Science Students Brave the Elements for Outdoor Learning Adventure

Level 3 Science students recently swapped screens for streams, embarking on a two-day camping trip to Blackhills Scout Campsite in Bingley, despite the challenges posed by Storm Amy.

The trip was held at the end of September and followed the success of a similar camp in June 2025 and was designed to help students develop practical skills, build resilience, and connect with nature.

Despite a yellow weather warning on the first night, students remained upbeat, spending the evening in on-site huts before pitching tents for the second night once conditions improved.

Blackhills Scout Campsite, run by Bradford North and South Scout Districts, provided the perfect setting for a range of activities including photography, orienteering, and even a Dungeons & Dragons session. Students also explored the surrounding forest, identifying wild mushrooms and other plantation.

Evening campfires became a highlight, with students cooking their own meals and working together to foster teamwork, problem-solving, and independent skills.

“We run these camps to give young people the chance to enjoy nature and realise they’re not far from big reserves,” said Keely Saint, Science and Technology Academic Lead and one of the camp organisers.

“Many students have never camped or spent time in nature, so it’s a life-changing experience for them.”

With no access to phone signal, the trip offered a rare opportunity for both students and staff to unplug, recharge and strengthen their connection to the outdoors and each other.
