Joinery and Brickwork Students Explore Live Construction at Persimmon Homes’ Cote Farm Site

Bradford College Construction students were given a valuable insight into the world of modern housebuilding during a site visit to Persimmon Homes’ Cote Farm development in Thackley on 11 February 2026. The visit formed part of the College’s celebrations for National Apprenticeship Week, highlighting the importance of real‑world experience in developing the future construction workforce.

Students were guided around multiple sections of the development, giving them the rare opportunity to observe homes at different stages of construction. From first‑fix joinery to brickwork in progress, learners were able to see how the skills practised in their College workshops translate directly into fast‑paced industry environments.

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland, Ward Councillor for the area, also attended the visit, recognising the significance of employer engagement in shaping opportunities for young people.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Trades Professionals

The visit was organised in partnership with Persimmon Homes as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to developing skilled young professionals.
Michael Johnson, Regional Apprenticeship Manager for Persimmon, emphasised the value of such experiences:

“In the past five years, we’ve had more than 600 young people complete an apprenticeship with Persimmon, so we’re always looking at new ways to inspire young people into the industry – particularly during National Apprenticeship Week.”

Students were able to speak directly to site managers, explore the workflow of a large housing development, and gain insight into employer expectations, emerging technologies and modern building methods.

Strengthening College–Employer Partnerships

Bradford College continues to work closely with Persimmon Homes to ensure learners gain access to meaningful employer encounters throughout their studies.
Greg Bourke, Head of Construction at Bradford College, said:

“Bradford College are again delighted to work with Persimmon Homes, and grateful for the invitation to the Cote Farm development in Thackley during Apprenticeship Week. Experiencing a live site deepens our students’ understanding of modern industry practice, strengthens employer partnerships, and helps prepare the skilled, confident workforce our region’s future depends on.”

Students Reflect on Their Experience

The hands‑on visit made a lasting impact on learners, many of whom are preparing to progress into apprenticeships or employment.

Alfie Firth, Carpentry and Joinery student, shared:

“I really enjoyed the site visit. It was good to see the practical tasks we do at college at full scale.”

For some, the experience strengthened their desire to build a career in the construction industry.
Raj Bangar, Brickwork student, said:

“Going to Cote Farm was honestly really interesting. It helped me understand loads more because I could actually see in real life what the tutors talk about in class. Being on site made everything click, and it’s made me want to push myself more and actually go for a career in the industry.”

Councillor Jeanette Sunderland also praised the initiative:

“It was a pleasure to visit Persimmon’s Cote Farm site and meet Bradford College students who are just getting started in their career. It’s so important that young people are given the right tools and access when they are learning a trade, so it was fantastic to see students be given a chance to learn more about the industry today.”

Real‑Life Learning, Real‑World Impact

Visits like this form a core part of the College’s Construction curriculum, ensuring learners develop both practical skill and a deeper understanding of the sector they are preparing to enter. As Bradford College continues to strengthen relationships with regional employers, opportunities like the Cote Farm visit help empower students to make informed decisions about apprenticeships, employment, and their long‑term careers.
