Cambodia Trip Gives Bradford College Students a New Global Perspective

Students from Bradford College returned from Cambodia with unforgettable memories, new cultural insights and a deeper understanding of global issues following a life-changing international trip.

The visit provided students with the opportunity to work alongside local communities, experience Cambodian culture first-hand and develop valuable personal skills outside of the classroom.

One of the most impactful moments of the trip was a visit to Cambodia’s Genocide Museum, where students learned about the country’s difficult history and the resilience of its people.

Reflecting on the experience, Bradford College tutor Steph Hindle said the visit left a lasting impression on the group.

“For the students I feel the best experience for them was visiting the Genocide Museum. Although it was a difficult day, it was a big eye-opener in understanding how resilient the people of Cambodia truly are despite some of the horrors they’ve faced.”

Throughout the trip, students also spent time at a local school, building relationships with staff and learners while gaining an appreciation of the challenges faced by educators in different parts of the world.

Steph Hindle said speaking with teachers at the school highlighted the contrast between education systems and helped put into perspective the opportunities available in the UK.

“We discovered that these teachers don’t have holidays like half terms and summer breaks and they work six days a week for a minimal salary. It really opened my eyes to how lucky I am to work at Bradford College.”

As well as supporting activities in local schools, students immersed themselves in Cambodian culture, enjoying traditional food, exploring historic landmarks and experiencing everyday life in a country very different from their own.

The welcoming nature of the local people made a particularly strong impression on the group.

“The people of Cambodia were so wonderful and welcoming. We were treated like locals, experienced incredible food and saw some amazing sights,” said Steph.

The experience challenged students to step outside their comfort zones, broaden their understanding of the world and develop greater confidence and independence.

Reflecting on the trip as a whole, Steph described it as “a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” and said she was grateful to have been part of an experience that offered students invaluable personal and educational growth.

The Cambodia trip forms part of Bradford College’s commitment to providing students with enriching opportunities that help them develop global awareness, cultural understanding and skills that will benefit them in their future studies and careers.
