Bradford College Greenpower Race Day Creeps Closer
Various Bradford schools have been digging out their spanners since the turn of the New Year, as our first-ever ‘Greenpower Challenge’ edges closer and closer.
Back in January, seven schools were lucky enough to take delivery of their very own electric kit car – provided by Bradford College – with the challenge of building them ready for a special July race day.
Since then, there’s been no chance to take the foot off the gas as groups of students work hard to build their special cars, with schools even incorporating the build into the curriculum.
The initiative comes with a package of technical and practical expertise and support which is provided by staff from the Bradford College Motor Vehicle Department and The Greenpower Education Trust.
The schools taking part are:
Hanson Academy
Hazelbeck School
Oastlers Keighley
Parkside School
Dixons City Academy
Tong Leadership Academy
BBG Academy
Bradford College 14-16 Provision
So how exactly are the various race teams getting on?
Throughout April and May, we visited the competing teams to see who might be favourites to be crowned champions come 11th July. Here’s a sneak peak at some of the progress…
Hanson Academy, Bradford
Bradford College 14-16
“I think this experience has provided me with useful knowledge for the future, as electric vehicles are becoming more prevalent.” – Philip (student)
BBG Academy, Birkenshaw
“We’ve made really good progress with the Greenpower Kart- can I just say how grateful we are to Vik from Bradford College for giving up his time to help us. It’s been a pleasure to have him come over to BBG, he’s been great with the students and we’ve really appreciated his time. A big thank you.”
Donna Johnson, Art and Design teacher
Dixons City Academy, Bradford
Hazelbeck School, Bingley
“Our team at Hazelbeck have made a start on our car, and are really enjoying it so far. We currently allocate 1 morning a week to the project – this is made up of some practical work and some theory. To complement the project, students are completing an AQA Unit award. We are also adapting the Motorsport UK Schools programme on single seater racing, so that students can see what else is going on in the world of motorsport at different levels. Some of our students have signed up to the UK Marshals accreditation to help them understand the rules, regulations and safety requirements needed in motorsport activities”

Motor Vehicle Students Drive Innovation with Hands-On Learning Projects
10 days
Creativity and innovation are in full gear at Bradford College, where our 14–16 Motor Vehicle students have turned an everyday challenge into an exciting opportunity for learning and teamwork. During practical sessions, students found themselves drawn to a fully intact car in the workshop, a model that, while inspiring, often proved more distracting than productive. […]
