Alumnus Suly helps develop new BSc Information Systems and Management Degree

Innovative duo Robert Coop and Suliman Khan are supporting Bradford College to develop a new BSc (Hons) Information Systems Management degree programme.

Suliman, or ‘Suly’, a user experience consultant with Leeds-based digital consultancy Hippo Digital, graduated from Bradford College in 2017 with a Computing degree. He and Hippo Digital Innovation Director Robert are now helping create the next generation of talented IT professionals. They are supporting the development of the innovative new course. This degree will be available from September 2022.

Special skills for successful future

Both also delivered a presentation at Bradford College about potential careers in the IT world. They spoke to around 50 students from a wide variety of IT-related courses about using their special skills for a successful future.

Robert gave an employer’s perspective on the technologies and new philosophies used in the IT consultancy and software development industry.  Suly then discussed how the students can succeed from their degree. He also described how they can make the best of their skills when they go into employment.

Achieving a dream

Suly told the students how Bradford College supported him to achieve his dream. After taking A Levels in Business Studies and IT, he progressed to a degree in Computing. He explained: “The reason I wanted to study at college rather than a larger university was the greater level of support. Not everyone can learn from being in a larger lecture theatre, so I felt I was in a more supportive environment.

“The lecturers were really good. We studied different elements such as website development, mobile applications and development of databases.”

One of the modules Suly undertook was around design related to human computer interaction. It was through that module he discovered what he wanted to do in future – design outstanding digital user experiences.

After working with Eclipse Legal Systems, Suly began working at Hippo Digital. He has been involved with a variety of major public sector organisations including NHS Digital and the Department of Education. For example, he has worked on the login process on the NHS app. He said: “What the team I was part of continuously did, impacted millions of people.”

A time to explore your future

Suly offered advice to students around making the best of their time at Bradford College. He said their studies were “a time to explore what they want to do in their future working lives.” Robert also explained the work of Hippo Digital and the opportunities available in the industry.

HE Computing and Information Systems and Software Engineering degrees lead Sophia Mian said: “We’re really grateful for them for coming here and taking the time to give a presentation. It was really good to see one of our students who has studied with us and helped everyone else to benefit from the work he has done.”
