What is a student carer?

A student carer is a student who provides unpaid support to someone who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner, or friend who is ill, frail, disabled, or has mental health or substance misuse issues.

Caring roles can be different for all student carers and can regularly change but some examples can include the following:

  • practical tasks (for example cooking, housework and shopping)
  • physical care (such as helping someone out of bed)
  • personal care (including helping someone dress)
  • helping someone to give their medication
  • managing the family budget
  • managing prescriptions and medication
  • helping someone to communicate
  • looking after siblings
  • providing emotional support

At Bradford College we appreciate that juggling a caring responsibility and your studies is not easy. That’s why we have dedicated and trained staff to provide you with support and ensure you get the best out of your time with us.
