Project SEARCH is a one-year supported internship programme. Classroom learning is combined with on-the-job work experience onsite in Next Distribution Centre in Bradford. This session will give you information about the programme and site. You will get to meet the programme coordinator and job coach. You will also here from current interns who are on the programme.

FAME 4 STEM – supporting diversity in women in STEM careers

This series of events is aimed at young women from ethnic minority backgrounds who are thinking about a career in STEM. All events will be led by STEM education and employment experts. The Cultural Ecology Project (CEP) aims to raise aspiration within technology and innovation, increase community engagement, and help create an infrastructure that supports and empowers women and girls from ethnic minority backgrounds through social enterprise. This project was founded as a direct response to the lack of FAME representation in the STEM sector as experienced by current sector practitioners.

Adam Nichols, Group Recruitment Manager at JCT600 Ltd Leeds, spoke to us about a number of future careers within the company.  JCT600 is one of the largest and best regarded car dealers in the UK with over 75 years of experience. He spoke about the history of the company as well as the apprenticeship scheme to become a Sales Executive and Technician, plus many more roles, and how to apply if interested.

Crown Prosection Service Careers

Work Placements Team, and Alisha Kaye, Crown Prosecutor

The Crown Prosecution Service prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales. The CPS is independent, and makes its decisions independently of the police and government. Crown Prosecutor Alisha Kaye speaks to UPS students about the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), breaking down the various roles that make up the CPS, giving us an exciting insight into her job and the cases she deals with. You’ll also get information on how you can work for the CPS.

Our Work Experience department works closely with employers to offer industry links and professional work experience opportunities on many of our courses, giving you hands-on experience in the world of work.

Work experience helps you find out if a career is the right one for you, and it makes you better prepared for entering the workplace. It also looks good on your CV!

British Army REME and Royal Engineers Careers Talk, 2:00pm-3:30pm

Millie Whittaker, Work Placements Team, and Ian Cox (British Army Lead Recruiter)

The Motor Vehicle and Engineering departments have been invited to this virtual event to learn about the careers in the British Army in relation to the motor vehicle/transport departments.

It is a specific presentation focusing on these careers rather than general roles in the British Army, and will cover the joining process, and life in the British Army. Hear from active soldiers across the UK who work with tanks, defenders, recovery machinery, helicopters, and other vehicle maintenance roles.

Sam Hinchliffe will be talking about his experience in the sporting world, and how hard work got him to where he is today. He will also talk about the cricket club, the everyday runnings of it, and about the various different job roles there are in the sports industry.

UK Parliament Workshop, 11:00am-12:00pm

Anne Barker, Work Placements Team, Rachael Dodgson, UK Parliament Senior Education & Engagement Officer, and Youmna Khan, Paliament Education & Engagement Officer

Rachael Dodgson and Youmna Khan will be talking to students about the UK Parliament’s work placement and apprenticeship programme.

There are several schemes run by the government which provide work placements and apprenticeships with MPs and the Houses of Parliament.

Two hours of work placement will be recorded for every UPS and Sports student that attends this session.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service Careers, 12:00pm-1:00pm

Millie Whittaker, Work Placements Team, and Jason Carlyon, Senior Engagement Lead (Community) YAS

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) was formed on 1 July 2006 when the county’s three former services merged.

They employ more than 5,800 staff, who together with over 1,100 volunteers, enable a vital 24-hour, seven-days-a-week, emergency and healthcare service. They receive an average of over 2,700 emergency and routine calls a day.

Jason Carlyon from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service will be speaking to you about the various roles in the Ambulance Service, training, and how the Ambulance Service has changed over time.

Millie Whittaker, Work Placements Team, and Harley Gasson, Senior Powertrain Design Engineer at McLaren

McLaren Group is globally renowned as one of the world’s most illustrious high-technology brands. Since the formation of McLaren Racing in 1963, McLaren has been pioneering and innovating in the competitive world of Formula 1, forging a formidable reputation which has seen the racing team win 20 World Championships and over 180 races (from McLaren website).

Various personnel involved in McLaren racing, McLaren automotive and McLaren Applied have kindly agreed to talk to Bradford College students about careers within McLaren, how to get there and what to expect. There will be a chance at the end of the live video talk to ask any of our guests questions about their careers and McLaren.

Blood Donations and Organ Transplants, 12:00pm-1:00pm

Millie Whittaker, Work Placements Team, and Blood and Transplant, NHS

Blood and Transplant will be talking about being able to donate blood at age 17, the requirements to do so and how students who are interested can apply.

They will also talk about the need for minority ethnic blood donors and the recent law change of gay and bisexual men being able to donate blood. They will also cover the opt-out organ donor programme.

They will speak about the process of organ donation, from the perspective of a healthcare professional and a donor/donor family and educate the students on why the opt-out law is in action.

Nadia Azam, an audiologist at Leeds General Infirmary, has kindly agreed to speak to students for an hour about audiology, her training to become a qualified audiologist and some of the things you might see if you were to pursue the role as a career. Attendance will be registered as 1 hour towards your work experience.
