  Overview

This course has been designed to prepare learners with what to expect and what will be expected of them when studying at a higher level (University). It will enable learners to make an informed and confident choice about the options available at a higher level of study. This course will help learners to understand their own strengths and weaknesses and identify areas for further development.

In addition, learners will explore which higher level route is the right choice for them and their future career aspirations.

The objectives of these qualifications are to help learners to:

  • prepare for and feel more confident about moving onto higher level studies
  • develop the skills required for studying at a higher level
  • gain an insight into life at a Higher Education institution

Our tutors are ready to support you and give you a fresh start in your learning journey all lessons all focused on developing your opportunities to progressing on to other further and higher level education courses within the college.

This course aims to provide learners with a number of progression options, including higher level studies at university or FE colleges. The skills required to progress to higher academic studies are different from those required at Levels 1 and 2. Level 3 qualifications enable the development of these skills.

Although there is no single definition of higher level learning skills, they include:

  • Checking and testing information
  • Supporting your points with evidence
  • Self-directed study
  • Self-motivation
  • Thinking for yourself
  • Analysing and synthesising information/materials
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Working collaboratively
  • Reflecting upon learning and identifying improvements.
  • Communication skills: personal presentation, interview skills
  • Confidence in Reading and Writing
  • Confidence building, dealing with problems in daily life.
  • Digital employability skills
  • Skills for the workplace, work to develop skills to help you work in a job or voluntary/community work.

Level 3 criteria can require learners to analyse, draw conclusions, interpret or justify, which are all examples of higher level skills.

This qualification consists of one mandatory unit:

  • Unit 01 Higher level studies

Entry to this course requires:

  • A Level 3 qualification as well as GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths at a grade 4. Functional Skills Level 2 is also accepted.
  • This course is for anyone 16+ (EHCP students need to have had their 19th birthday).

Assessment includes coursework.

To be awarded the Level 3 Award in Higher Level Studies, learners are required to successfully complete the one mandatory unit.

Successful completion of this course can lead to further study as well as higher education study and University. Learners who achieve these qualifications could progress to a higher level study course in any sector.
