Do you have a passion for science and want to pursue this as a career?

The applied science field has high expectations, with new recruits frequently needing specific skills regardless of their desired discipline. This course will provide the foundation required to get you set for an exciting career in the science industry. This course is perfect if you have a passion for problem solving and investigation and a good eye for detail.

You’ll learn both the principles and applications of all three sciences. You will also be able to develop your skills in Maths and English.

You can expect hands-on practical learning combined with gaining a good grasp of theory. You will study in our specialist laboratories and be taught by highly skilled and experienced tutors. You’ll get a great insight into the career paths available across a range of scientific careers.

You will be taught in a variety of ways including lectures, practical work as well as self-directed study. You will learn by completing practicals, projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You will focus on a particular area and develop a range of specialist skills and knowledge.

The course is made up of 8 core units (2 of which are examined) and 4 additional units.

If you who do not have a grade 4 or higher in GCSE English and Maths you will study these subjects alongside your BTEC course.

The core units are:

  • Principles of Science (examined in February)
  • Chemistry and Our Earth
  • Energy and Our Universe
  • Biology and Our Environment.
  • Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Applications of Physical Science
  • Health Applications of Life Sciences
  • Scientific Skills (examined in May)

The additional units are:

  • World Energy
  • The Living Body
  • Monitoring the Environment
  • Investigating a Crime Scene

Entry to this course requires 3 GCSEs at a grade A-D or 9-3 including GCSE Maths and English Language.

Assessment will be by assignments, presentations, observation of practical work and practical lab written reports. Each unit studied will use one or more of these assessment methods. In addition, there are two examined units in this qualification.

You will undertake 30 hours work experience in a related field which will be arranged for you.

The skills and knowledge you gain on the course will enable you to progress on to more advanced qualification such as the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science or get a job in a range of scientific areas including Environmental Science, Food Science, Scientific Research, Quality Control, Hospital Laboratory work and new Product Testing.

If you are 16 to 18 years old you won’t have to pay tuition fees. If you’re 19 or older you may need to pay a fee.
