Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses are for graduates intending to teach:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • English
  • French
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Spanish

Their purpose is to enhance subject knowledge and understanding before an Initial Teacher Training Course.

The courses are aimed at graduates who wish to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but do not meet PGCE or apprenticeship entry requirements due to insufficient subject knowledge and career changers who would like to improve their subject knowledge prior to the PGCE.

Find out more about our SKE courses here.

What you'll study

SKE courses are suitable for core and school direct trainees, apprenticeship and PGCE trainees.

You will be directed by your provider to register for an appropriate course of 8,12,16,20,24 or 28 weeks duration after interview and complete a number of modules that cover the relevant national Curriculum content at GCSE and or A level.

There is some flexibility in start and end dates according to individual needs.

SKE courses are suitable for both core and school direct trainees.

Learning takes place through the use of videos with worked examples, presentations and workbooks that contain practice exercises related to each module.

Before each module you will complete two audits that assess your subject knowledge and confidence in delivery. This will allow you to target areas of development as you work.

All courses are modular. Modules will be delivered online where you can learn at your own pace, at a time that suits you. Our courses use online technology to bring you videos and a range of resources to support your learning journey. You are also supported by a team of subject specialist tutors and technical help is available 24/7.

Assessment

Each participant completes an individual development portfolio which will act both as a tool for monitoring and tracking their progress and to provide evidence at the end of the course for them to take to the ITT Institution in which they intend to complete their training.

Entry requirements

You must have been offered a place on a relevant Initial Teacher Education route conditional on first taking and satisfactorily completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.

Next steps

If you are interested in SKE courses as a route towards Initial Teacher Education you need to apply through UCAS Teacher Training for the Initial Teacher Education course of your choice, mentioning your willingness to undertake a relevant enhancement course in the personal statement.
