Course overview

This Level 2 qualification is for anyone who wants to work as a plumber in the building services engineering sector.

You will learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the plumbing sector. 

It is practical based with classroom theory sessions.

Attendance is two evenings per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) or all day Friday for 36 weeks.

What you'll study

You will study the following units:

  • Health and safety in building services engineering
  • Electrical principles and processes for building services engineering
  • Scientific principles for domestic, industrial and commercial plumbing
  • Common plumbing processes
  • Cold and hot water domestic water systems
  • Sanitation
  • Central heating systems
  • Drainage systems
  • Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
  • You will study the following units:

    • Health and safety in building services engineering
    • Electrical principles and processes for building services engineering
    • Scientific principles for domestic, industrial and commercial plumbing
    • Common plumbing processes
    • Cold and hot water domestic water systems

Assessment

The course is assessed by continuous practical assessments and online exams for each unit.

You will also carry out an assessment which requires you to install a bathroom suite.

Entry requirements

Level 1
Plumbing

You will be interviewed to assess your suitability for the course.

You will also be assessed on your Literacy and Numeracy skills.

You must achieve a minimum of Entry Level 3 in both Literacy and Numeracy. 

Next steps

You will be required to wear safety boots with steel toe caps and hi-vis vest when working in the College workshops. Successful completion of a Level 2 course can lead onto a Level 3 course. Your course may include work experience or a work placement that could lead to the offer of a part-time or casual work, or you might work outside of your studies. A plumber has the potential to earn anywhere between £12K and £40 per year. Working in the building services engineering sector could see you managing major buildings, structures and facilities. Career opportunities are available through large contractors and smaller specialist employers in the public and private sectors. You could also train to become your own boss and become self-employed. Our students benefit from local site visits and trips to construction companies, such as our award-winning local partner Priestley Construction.
