Course overview

The Hairdressing Studies – VTCT Level 2 Diploma (QCF) is ideal for anyone wanting a career as a hairdresser employed in a salon or self-employed.

This qualification is based on the hairdressing National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional body, The Hairdressing Council.

This course is run in the David Hockney Building.

What you'll study

The content of the course comprises all the elements you will require to work as a junior hairdresser/stylist.

Mandatory units include:

  • Health and Safety
  • Client Consultation
  • Shampoo and Conditioning Hair
  • A Research Unit – Working in the Hair Industry
  • Cut Women’s Hair
  • Colour and Lighten hair
  • The Art of Dressing Hair.

You will also develop your skills and understanding by studying technical units.

You will be required to attend some twilight and evening sessions.

Assessment

This qualification can be achieved through you gathering evidence in the College’s hair salon environment.

Entry requirements

  • Four GCSEs at a minimum of Grade D/3 including English and Maths.
  • Successful completion of a Level 1 Hairdressing qualification.
  • You will be invited for an interview and will be required to take a skills test.

English and/or Maths will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course.

Tuition fees

If you are 16 to 18 years old you won't have to pay tuition fees.

Things you will need

You will need to:

  • Purchase and wear a uniform.
  • You may also have to provide some of your own models.
  • There may be additional costs for enrichment activities, such as attending trade fairs, conferences etc.

All the necessary uniform can be purchased from the Hair & Beauty Department during July, August and September.
