Course overview

The one year Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma in Art, Design and Media course is suitable for students over the age of 19 who wish to develop a portfolio of art, media and design-related work for entry to Higher Education.

You will get experience in two and three dimensions within a range of disciplines currently taught within art and design.

Completion of this course will let you select a specialist pathway for undergraduate study.

What you'll study

Experiences could include drawing, printmaking, graphic design, ceramics, textile design, photography and ICT. An introduction to these disciplines will develop your individual creative potential in a supportive environment enabling you to develop concepts, take creative risks and understand techniques and processes

You will complete 15 ungraded units in:

  • Study Skills
  • Further Study Skills
  • Introduction to Drawing
  • Introduction to Media Editing

You will complete 45 graded credits in:

  • Contextual Research
  • Visual Language
  • Foundations in Design
  • 3D Art and Design
  • Graphic Communication
  • Printmaking
  • Manipulating Images
  • Final Exhibition
  • Final Major Project
  • Specialist Portfolio.

The course offers you 60 Credits at Level 3 and will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Expect to spend around 15 hours a week on studies outside of your college timetable. You will need to allow this time for assignments, lesson preparation and revision activities. If you have a job, we recommend that you do not work more than 15 hours per week due to the intensity of the Access course.  You should also expect to work with others and independently, meet deadlines and complete work to a high standard.

Assessment

Assessment on Access programmes involves a range of methods such as essays, presentations, reports, research investigations and two end-of-year examinations.

You will have a combination of 15 ungraded and 45 graded units. For the graded units you will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Entry requirements

GCSE English
Grade 4 or C

You will be interviewed and will need to bring your portfolio/folder of art, media or design-related work.

You must be aged 19 or over.

Next steps

In addition to the skills gained in art, design and media, you will also develop skills in independent research, critical thinking and evaluative skills, study skills, interview skills and interpersonal skills. You will develop the necessary skills to progress onto Higher Education. We will introduce you to the UCAS system and provide tutorial sessions for university applications.
