Key Info
This course is for those who wish to teach numeracy.
We use a strong element of work-based learning to make sure your studies can be directly applied to your teaching practice. For the first part of the course, we focus on the development of teaching and learning skills and developing knowledge of your sector. This will equip you with the necessary skills to enter the classroom with confidence. A personal tutor will offer you support and guidance, along with the course tutor and team.
You will be taught in classroom sessions using a variety of teaching methods but with the emphasis on active learning. These sessions will help you to work with other teachers. Specific Modules will also demand workplace-based assessment tasks, for example, the observation of an experienced teacher.
You will be required to attend one afternoon and evening per week and undertake further private study. You will be assessed academically during the six modules of the course, and in your teaching through observation of your practice by the teaching team and your mentor. Those who teach Numeracy can also achieve a Specialist Diploma in their subject.
Modules are:
- Teaching, Learning and Assessment
- Exploring Learning Theories
- Developing Curriculum
- Developing professional Practice
- Subject Specialist Pedagogy*
- Teacher as Researcher*
*If you are taking a specialism in Numeracy you will study two specialist modules instead of the starred modules.
Entry to this course requires a Level 3 qualification in your subject area and a Level 2 qualification in English. You should normally have a GCSE English and Mathematics qualification or equivalent, although you can achieve the Mathematics qualification during the course. A satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required for this course.
You will be interviewed.
Applications should be made direct to the College.
We also consider individual applicants who can demonstrate relevant learning, work/voluntary experience, using our Recognition of Prior Learning process. Please contact the admission team for further information and support.
Each module has its own unique assessment which can take many different forms including essays, individual and group presentations or portfolios. These will draw upon your experience and knowledge gained as part of your work placement as well as your own studies. All assessments are supported by your module tutor. Additional learning support is offered to develop your writing and study skills.
This course involves a substantial teaching placement.
Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) is awarded by the Society for Education and Training once you have passed your course. QTLS status is recognised in law as equivalent to QTS for teaching in secondary schools. This is an excellent reason to choose this course for those wanting to teach in Further Education and secondary schools.
