After completing a full-time photography course, Isabelle Bartram realised she wanted something different, something that let her build independence, gain experience, and earn at the same time.
“I loved my photography course,” she explains, “but you’re not earning anything, and you’re being taught most of the time. Learning and earning at the same time is so much better.”
Encouraged by her sister and her dad, who had both taken the apprenticeship route, Isabel decided to explore a new path. A vacancy at mechanical, electrical and public (MEP) health service provider, G&H, caught her eye, and soon she was starting a fresh chapter as a Level 3 Business Administration apprentice.
Since joining the company, Isabelle has seen her confidence, responsibilities and career prospects grow rapidly.
“It has massively allowed me to excel in this company,” she says.
In just seven months, her role has transformed from typical reception tasks to becoming a key part of the administration team. Her responsibilities now include vehicle management, supporting multiple business teams, preparing pre-qualification questionnaires (PQQs), and working directly with external clients.
“I never thought I’d be doing the same tasks my mum used to do in her job,” she adds. The progression has been so significant that her job title has already been updated to Business Administrator, reflecting her growing contribution and ensuring she’s seen as a full professional within the organisation.
Isabelle’s apprenticeship has not only shaped her skills but also helped her discover a career she genuinely enjoys. “I’m so glad I didn’t go down the photography route,” she says. “I’m so happy I’ve got this job and this apprenticeship because it’s given me everything.” Recognising Isabelle’s aptitude, the company has trusted her to step up and take on more responsibility within her role, which she has confidently embraced.
Although Isabelle didn’t choose Bradford College herself, as it was linked to the apprenticeship, she’s pleased it worked out that way. “It’s local, easy to get to, and it’s been really good,” she says.
She particularly values the support she’s received from her tutor, Mike. “He’s really nice. He checks my work, makes sure I’m doing the right thing, and he’ll sit with you if you need help. He definitely wants us to pass.”
Isabelle enjoys her study days on campus and has attended each of her scheduled sessions. She finds Garden Mills “a really nice, calm building to work in,” which helps her stay focused and get ahead with her tasks. Even though the college is understanding if work commitments arise, Isabel prefers to make the most of her monthly sessions. This structure has helped Isabel progress efficiently; despite being on an 18-month programme, she has already completed her coursework and is now preparing for her End Point Assessment.
Looking back, Isabelle is confident she made the right choice. Her apprenticeship has given her valuable qualifications, professional experience, and a clear sense of direction, all while earning and progressing in a role she loves. Her advice to others thinking about apprenticeships is simple: take the chance. “I’m so happy with where I’ve ended up,” she says. “This apprenticeship has given me everything.”
