From NEET to New Opportunities: Jacob’s Construction Academy Success Story

At 20 years old, Jacob Relton from Wibsey was looking for a way forward. After completing a Level 3 Science course, Jacob spent around two years out of education, employment and training (NEET). Despite actively looking for work and completing a range of short courses, he struggled to find opportunities that didn’t require previous experience.

Determined to build a career and gain practical skills, Jacob enrolled on the Bradford College Construction Academy, starting with a Level 1 course before progressing to Level 2 Maintenance Skills.

Finding the Right Career Path

Jacob was attracted to the Academy because it offered the chance to explore several different trades in one programme.

“I figured a trade is a good idea to get into, and this academy offers many trades at the same time. So I get a piece of each to decide what I want to do with my life.”

Through the course, Jacob has developed skills across a range of construction disciplines, including brickwork, joinery and tiling, helping him gain a better understanding of where his future interests lie.

His long-term ambition is to become an electrician, and the Academy has allowed him to build valuable industry knowledge and practical experience while preparing for future apprenticeship opportunities.

Building Skills and Confidence

Alongside developing technical skills, Jacob says the course has helped him grow personally and professionally.

One of the biggest changes has been developing a stronger eye for detail and understanding the importance of precision in construction work.

“This trades course has brought an overall sense of needing to be precise.”

The Academy has also helped him build confidence in working with others.

“I’m not a very social person to begin with, but it’s definitely helped me develop the fact that I need to be more social because it helps. On a job, you need to talk to people.”

Working alongside fellow learners and tutors has strengthened his teamwork and communication skills, while the supportive learning environment has helped him thrive.

“Everyone’s very friendly and they’re always offering advice.”

Real-World Industry Experience

A key part of Jacob’s journey has been gaining hands-on experience through a two-week work placement.

His commitment and reliability stood out during the placement, where he attended every day and completed the full programme.

Reflecting on the experience, Jacob said:

“The boss personally said, ‘If you come back in November, we’ll offer you a job.’ That’s something I feel is an achievement. I proved myself.”

The experience gave Jacob valuable insight into working on a live construction site and reinforced his confidence that he had chosen the right career path.

Balancing Responsibilities

Like many adult learners, Jacob has had to balance his studies alongside other commitments.

While attending college, he has also been supporting his grandmother, whose health has declined, and fitting in driving lessons as he works towards greater independence.

Despite these challenges, he has remained committed to his studies.

“Keeping a schedule and knowing exactly what’s coming up helps me stay on track.”

Looking Ahead

Today, Jacob is focused on building a future in the construction industry. His goal is to secure an electrical apprenticeship, but he knows the broad range of skills he has gained through the Construction Academy gives him multiple career options.

“I’ve got opportunities now. I’ve got things I can apply for.”

Why Adult Learning Pays

Jacob believes returning to education has been instrumental in helping him gain direction and improve his employment prospects.

“You underestimate when you’re younger how much you’ll need in the future when you’re looking for work. Adult learning is great because you come back to education and it reinforces you being able to get work in the future.”

For anyone considering returning to education, Jacob has a simple message:

“You’re never too old to learn and you can always come back. Experience and knowledge are invaluable.”

Through the Construction Academy, Jacob has gained practical skills, real industry experience, renewed confidence and a clear pathway into employment, proving that it’s never too late to invest in your future.
