Having been home educated throughout her childhood, starting further education at college was a completely new experience for Niki. Having never attended school before, the move into formal education could have felt daunting, but she found the transition much easier than expected.
“I’d never been to school before starting college, so it was a big thing, but it didn’t feel like it completely turned my life upside down. It was relaxed and I settled in quickly.”
Niki joined Bradford College to gain the qualifications she needed in Maths and English before progressing onto the course she was passionate about. While Maths came naturally, she particularly appreciated the support she received with English.
“My English teacher was brilliant. He really helped me figure out exactly how to handle the exam and how to pass it. It was very methodical and made the whole process much more interesting to me.”
The support Niki received helped her build the skills and confidence to continue progressing in her studies.
Today, Niki is studying a Music course and is enjoying every aspect of college life.
“I’m never bored in any of my lessons. Everything feels important to my musical progression, and I’m doing plenty of rehearsing.”
As an electric and bass guitarist, Niki is already putting her skills into practice as part of the College band. She has also found the supportive atmosphere among students and staff invaluable.
“Everyone on the course has been so nice, and the teachers are really supportive. That’s been great.”
Perhaps the biggest change Niki has noticed since joining college is her growing confidence.
When she first started, she describes herself as feeling anxious and unsure about speaking to new people. Now, just a year later, she feels much more comfortable connecting with others and making friends.
“College has helped me with confidence massively. Last year, if I wanted to talk to someone, I would just freeze and never do it. Now I’m comfortable enough to just talk to people.”
Looking back on her journey from home education to college, Niki is proud of how far she has come. With growing confidence, new qualifications and a Music course she loves, she is excited about what the future holds.
