His journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when industry‑focused teaching, outstanding facilities, and supportive tutors come together.
Coming from Bradford and keen to stay local, Cameron chose Bradford College because its media courses offered a strong practical alternative to exam‑heavy routes.
“I’m not very good in exams, so I was looking for something more practical-based. The course offered a bit of everything—film, TV, editing, graphic design—and that variety really helped me find my direction.”
Starting on the Level 3 Creative Media Production course gave Cameron the freedom to explore different media disciplines before specialising. That breadth proved crucial.
“It helped me decide what I wanted to focus on next. I moved away from journalism and towards the technical side like editing, film and TV production, and that shaped everything that came after.”
At the end of his Level 3 course, Cameron hadn’t planned to progress into higher education. It was his tutors who recognised his potential and encouraged him to continue.
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. My tutors Dave and Leanne sat me down and said, ‘You can do this.’ I’m forever grateful for them.”
Cameron went on to complete an HND in Film and Television Production at Bradford College, an experience he describes as transformative, both professionally and personally.
Throughout his studies, Cameron was immersed in real-world production environments, developing confidence through hands-on experience.
From filming on location at Malham Cove to working collaboratively on productions, Bradford College’s emphasis on practical learning made a lasting impact.
“Being hands-on with production, the filming, interviewing, editing—those practical scenarios really helped make me who I am today.”
One standout experience was an ambitious cross-curricular international film project involving media, performing arts, music, costume and fashion students.
“We went to northern Spain and produced a short film together. Everyone worked towards the same goal, the actors, musicians, technicians, and then we premiered it at the National Media Museum. It felt like the real industry.”
These experiences didn’t just build technical skills; they taught Cameron how to work as part of a creative production team, an essential industry skill.
While studying for his HND, Cameron completed a mandatory work experience module, a decision that became the turning point in his career.
Instead of following the crowd, he applied for a rare BBC work experience opportunity.
“I wanted to try television. I applied, got the placement, and didn’t expect anything more than experience.”
But his professionalism and experience stood out.
“They called me afterwards and asked if I wanted to come back for freelance work. I hadn’t even finished studying yet and I already had my foot in the door.”
That opportunity led to casual shifts, freelance work, and ultimately his long‑term career at the BBC.
“If I hadn’t had all that practical experience at Bradford College, I wouldn’t have been ready for an environment like the BBC.”
After recently visiting Bradford College again, Cameron saw the new Producing Academy facilities for the first time, and admits he was more than a little jealous.
“I kept saying, ‘I wish I had this.’ The TV studio, the lighting desk, the vision mixer—the facilities are amazing.”
He believes initiatives like the Producing Academy give students something vital: strong foundations.
“If you learn the basics properly, everything becomes easier. You’ve got a solid foundation to build from and that’s so important in this industry.”
Cameron’s advice to aspiring media professionals is simple and powerful:
“Be a nuisance. Talk to people. Email people. Be enthusiastic and passionate about what you love.”
He also encourages students not to fear taking risks.
“Some risks don’t pay off, but others can change your life. Don’t be afraid to try.”
And for anyone thinking about applying to the Producing Academy?
“Do it. You’ll be in an environment with incredible facilities and staff who genuinely want to maximise your potential. It’s one of the best places you can be if you want to work in media.”
