For Mariam Taylor, studying a Level 3 in Esports at Bradford College has been about much more than gaming. It’s been an opportunity to develop new skills, explore future career pathways and prove that the industry is open to everyone.
Since joining the course, Mariam has discovered the many different opportunities available within the Esports sector, from coaching and content creation to business management and enterprise.
“I find it really, really fun. There’s so much that you can get out of it. There are so many different areas that you can go into.”
Throughout her studies, Mariam has gained valuable experience in video production, business planning and understanding how Esports organisations operate.
“You learn about coaching, business, how to run different enterprises and different companies. You learn where you can go next.”
One of Mariam’s favourite aspects of the course has been the opportunity to work on practical projects and develop creative skills.
“We’ve been recording videos and then editing them. I find that quite interesting.”
Alongside this, she has enjoyed learning about the business side of the industry and the work that goes into managing successful Esports teams and organisations.
“Learning about coaching and how to run an Esports enterprise makes it an enjoyable experience.”
As a woman entering an industry that is often seen as male-dominated, Mariam admits she was initially nervous about pursuing her passion.
“It was quite scary coming into it at first because it’s such a male-dominated industry.”
However, she has never allowed stereotypes to stand in the way of her ambitions.
“Watching all these amazing gamers growing up, I just found it was something I wanted to do. I couldn’t care if people tell me, ‘You’re a girl, you can’t game.’ I want to prove them wrong.”
Mariam is passionate about encouraging more women to enter the Esports industry and believes everyone should have the opportunity to succeed.
“With Esports, you’re all on the same playing field. We’re just as good as the men.”
When looking at her options after school, Bradford College quickly stood out.
“Compared to other places I looked at, it was just an amazing place.”
Mariam was particularly impressed by the investment in specialist Esports facilities and the enthusiasm of the teaching team.
“They put so much work into it and you can tell that they love what they do. That’s the place I wanted to be.”
Mariam already has ambitious plans for her future. After completing her studies at Bradford College, she hopes to progress to higher education and continue developing her skills within the Esports industry.
“I’m planning to go to the University of Esports in London and do further study.”
Her ultimate goal is to compete as part of an organised Esports team, specialising in her favourite game, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege.
Mariam’s hard work and commitment were recognised at the college’s annual student awards, where she was delighted to receive an award.
“When they were talking about the person, my heart was beating so fast. It was amazing. I loved it.”
Although she never expected to win, the recognition made the achievement even more special.
For anyone considering a future in Esports, Mariam has a simple message:
“If it’s something you want to do and something you love, go and do it. If you don’t take that opportunity, you’ll never know what you could achieve.”
Through her determination, passion and willingness to challenge expectations, Mariam is proving that there is a place for everyone in Esports.
