Esther Ajayi has been developing her passion for science through the BTEC Level 3 Applied Science course at Bradford College. With a natural curiosity about how the world works, she chose the course to explore her interest in biology and gain a deeper understanding of the science behind everyday life.
From the start, Esther set clear goals for herself: to build her laboratory skills, grow in confidence and prepare for a future in science. Since starting the course, she has embraced both the theoretical and practical aspects of her studies, turning her interest in science into a clear direction of her future.
Discovering a Passion for Science
“I’m mainly into biology, especially learning about how the human body works,” Esther said. “I’ve always found it really interesting trying to understand what’s going on around us and how things actually happen.”
Alongside developing her scientific knowledge, Esther was equally focused on personal growth. She wanted to improve her confidence and communication skills while preparing for university and future career opportunities.
Bringing Science to Life
Practical learning has been one of the most valuable parts of the course, helping to bring her studies to life. She particularly enjoyed the laboratory sessions, where she could carry out experiments and analyse results for herself. “The practical laboratory lessons were some of the most interesting parts of the course,” she explained. “It was really interesting to conduct experiments, analyse results and learn how it’s done properly.”
Studying human biology was another highlight, especially learning how different body systems and connecting classroom learning to real-life scientific applications.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Through her industry placement, Esther also experienced first-hand what it means to work in a professional environment, putting her communication, teamwork and organisational skills into practice. The experience strengthened her understanding of work expectations and helped prepare her for future opportunities.
The course has also helped Esther grow in confidence, both personally and academically. “I feel much more confident now working both independently and as part of a group,” she said. Skills that once felt unfamiliar, such as using laboratory equipment and analysing results, now come naturally, enabling her to carry out experiments, evaluate findings and present scientific information with confidence.
Preparing for the Future
Looking ahead, Esther feels well prepared for whatever comes next, whether that’s employment, an apprenticeship or further study. The combination of scientific knowledge, practical experience and transferrable skills has given her a strong foundation for the future.
“The course has helped me develop communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management and organisation skills,” she explained. “The practical experience and industry placement have also given me a better understanding of workplace expectations and made me feel more prepared for my next steps.”

“I would highly recommended BTEC Level 3 Applied Science to anyone interested in science,” she said. “The course is engaging, practical and gives you a good balance of classroom learning and hands-on experience.
