The College’s history stretches as far back as 1832, when the Bradford Mechanics Institute was founded to provide education and skills training for local people. Over the years, the institution evolved alongside the changing needs of industry and public services, continually adapting its curriculum to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required by employers.
Pharmacy education has been part of that story since the late 1950s, establishing a long-standing tradition of supporting Pharmacy Technicians and pharmacy support staff. During that time, the profession has undergone significant change, with Pharmacy Technicians increasingly taking on expanded responsibilities and playing a vital role in delivering patient-centred care.
Today, that heritage continues through a comprehensive range of pharmacy programmes designed to support learners from entry level through to higher education and advanced clinical practice.
The College’s pharmacy offer includes:
Over the years, thousands of learners have studied pharmacy at Bradford College, going on to work in community pharmacies, hospitals, GP practices and other healthcare settings. While the profession has evolved significantly since the late 1950s, our commitment to supporting Pharmacy Technicians has remained constant.
Together, these programmes provide clear progression routes for those looking to enter the profession, develop specialist skills or advance their careers within modern pharmacy services.
The latest addition to Bradford College’s pharmacy portfolio is a new higher education pathway for registered Pharmacy Technicians. The recently launched Level 4 HNC and Level 5 FdSc in Clinical Practice for Pharmacy Technicians have been designed to support healthcare professionals seeking to expand their clinical knowledge while continuing to work.
Delivered fully online on a part-time basis, the programme combines Level 4 and Level 5 study over four years, offering flexibility for busy professionals. Learners can complete the first two years and achieve a Higher National Certificate before progressing to complete the full Foundation Degree.
The new qualifications reflect the changing nature of the profession and growing demand for Pharmacy Technicians with advanced clinical skills, helping learners build on their existing expertise while supporting the future needs of healthcare services.
From its first pharmacy learners in the 1950s to today’s students preparing for the next generation of healthcare practice, Bradford College continues to play an important role in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence that Pharmacy Technicians need to succeed.
This World Pharmacy Technician Day, we’re proud to celebrate nearly 70 years of pharmacy education and look forward to supporting the next generation of learners for years to come.
