When Tayyaba decided she wanted to progress to university and pursue a career in dental hygiene and therapy, she knew she needed a qualification that would strengthen her science knowledge while fitting around her existing commitments.
Already working as a dental nurse, she chose Bradford College’s Adult Applied Science course over studying A Levels online because she preferred learning in a classroom environment.
“Personally, I like it when I’m at college. It’s more hands-on and practical. This course gives me the opportunity to build my science knowledge and work towards university at the same time.”
Balancing Study and Work
Now in her second year studying the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Applied Science, Tayyaba has successfully balanced her studies with employment, adjusting her work schedule so she can continue developing both academically and professionally.
Support Every Step of the Way
One of the highlights of her experience has been the support she has received from staff throughout her studies.
“Everyone is really supportive. Last year was all based on exams and all the support was there. My tutors are really helpful, and I know where to go if I need support.”
Working Towards a Future Career
The course is providing Tayyaba with the qualifications she needs to apply for university, with plans to continue her education in Leeds, Sheffield or Manchester as she works towards becoming a Dental Hygienist and Therapist.
Advice for Future Adult Learners
Reflecting on her experience, Tayyaba encourages anyone considering science as an adult learner to take the opportunity, even if they’re unsure about their future career path. She believes science opens doors to a wide range of opportunities and provides valuable time to explore different options. Looking back, she says that if she had known about the course after completing her GCSEs, she would have enrolled straight away. Her advice is simple: “Just do it. You have time to learn, gain qualifications and figure out what you want to do along the way.”
