Bradley Eccles’ journey at Bradford College is a powerful story of discovery, showing how a long-standing love of music, combined with the right support and opportunities, can grow into a clear passion and future career path.
A Lifelong Connection to Music
For Bradley, music was never something entirely new, it had always been there in the background of his life. What changed was when he began to truly engage with it himself.
“All my life I’ve always listened to music… if I listen to something great, I’m like wow; it can trigger a feeling, and it does trigger a feeling.”
During his early time at college, while studying construction, Bradley began to explore music more personally. At a time when his mental health wasn’t in the best place and he needed a positive outlet, he picked up the guitar and started teaching himself.
“My dad recommended just picking up the guitar… it might help you out a little bit. And I did.”
It wasn’t easy at first, but he committed to it:
“I was really, really bad for a really long time and I wasn’t happy about it, but I stuck with it… and the more I played it, the better I got.”
This persistence marked the beginning of something much bigger.
From Interest to Passion at College
While Bradley was studying construction, Bradford College gave him the freedom and opportunity to explore his growing interest in music. A chance conversation with another student introduced him to the music course – and, importantly, to the college’s facilities:
“I met a student who was on the music course, and they said, ‘why don’t you practise with us in the music facilities?’ and I was like, yeah, that’s great.”
Bradley took it a step further by reaching out to staff, showing initiative and enthusiasm:
“I emailed the head of music and said, would you mind if I use your rehearsal spaces in my break times and lunch times… just to keep focused and keep myself out of trouble.”
The response he received reflects the supportive culture at Bradford College: they welcomed him in.
From that moment, everything began to shift:
“After I got used to it, I found myself coming to college pretty much for that… I’d do my course, but then I’d be straight into music. That’s what I was there for, it was great.”
What started as casual practice quickly became the highlight of his college experience.
Making the Leap Into Music
As his passion for music grew, Bradley began to realise it was more aligned with who he was and what he wanted to pursue. What made the transition possible was the encouragement he received from tutors across both courses.
“I spoke to my construction tutor and he said if you’re getting that much enjoyment out of it… and that’s the reason you’re coming in, then you should go for it.”
This honest and supportive guidance gave Bradley the confidence to take the next step. The music department also welcomed him, but with the expectation that he would fully commit:
“They said as long as you commit yourself and show you’re willing… and here I am.”
That belief in him made a lasting impact.
Discovering the Depth of Music
Once officially on the Level 3 Music Performance and Production course, Bradley quickly realised that music was far more than just playing an instrument. The course opened his eyes to the many sides of the industry:
“I thought you’d just go in and play music, but there’s way more than that. There’s recording, producing, composing, live performance: loads of things I didn’t expect.”
Rather than feeling overwhelmed, Bradley embraced it:
“But it didn’t put me off… I found myself really enjoying the work.”
With access to top-quality facilities, he was able to fully immerse himself in the experience:
“We’ve got everything… the studio, soundproofing, lighting, instruments—it’s everything we need.”
Growth, Confidence, and Creativity
Bradley’s development since joining the music course has been immense. Not just in skill, but in confidence and identity.
“I’ve gotten so much better… I’ve got a range of different guitar knowledge now, I understand theory, I can write.”
One of the most meaningful parts of his journey has been becoming part of a band and creating original music:
“I’m in a band… we’re working on an album. That is a massive change.”
Hearing the finished results of his work has been a defining moment:
“We just finished recording and producing a track… I listened to it all day. It was amazing. I’m really proud of how it turned out.”
Looking Ahead With Purpose
Now, Bradley looks ahead with excitement and clarity, something that wasn’t always certain before discovering music in this way. He sees multiple paths, whether through further education or continuing to build his band and perform live.
“I can see myself going to university… or sticking it out with the band, doing more gigs, releasing more music, getting out there.”
Thanks to Bradford College, Bradley doesn’t just have options; he has direction and belief in what he can achieve.
A Journey Shaped by Opportunity
Bradley’s story shows how powerful it can be when a college nurtures curiosity and supports students to explore what truly inspires them. From picking up a guitar during his construction course, to performing, recording, and planning a future in music, his journey has been shaped by opportunity, encouragement, and high-quality resources.
Reflecting on it all, his appreciation is clear:
“If it wasn’t for the support… I don’t know if I’d have made the change.”
Bradley’s journey into music didn’t happen overnight: but with determination, support, and the opportunities provided at Bradford College, it grew into something life-changing.
